I hope that you all had a fun weekend!! I hope that many of you were able to attend the Pirate Pride Potluck on Sunday!
Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday!! Please join us if you have an opportunity to do so.There is No School next Monday, September 5, 2016 because it is Labor Day.
This week, we are beginning our Scantron Testing. Please remember that your students should get plenty of rest the nights before tests and have a good breakfast in the morning to help them focus on doing their very best.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...Religion- The students will be able to explain the meaning of the Kingdom of God. The students will be able to identify how we can serve the Kingdom of God. The students will review the chapter skills and concepts that are key to growing as disciples of Jesus Christ. The students will be evaluated on Thursday, September 1st.
Math- The students will be exploring how to read and write decimals through the thousandths place. They will also be comparing and ordering whole numbers and decimals. We will be applying the properties of addition and the rules of subtraction in order to find the missing number. We will be calculating numbers by rounding whole numbers as well as decimals to a given place.I will be mentioning IXL in class and I will be encouraging the class to use their IXL accounts to reinforce the learning that is taking place in the classroom.
Science- Last week, the students were learning how Galileo built a telescope that had only 3x magnification. The students had a blast and really enjoyed building and using the telescope. We are really enjoying our Nancy Larson Science! This week, the students will be able to identify factors that determine which stars and constellations we see. The students will be able to locate constellations on sky maps. The students will be able to describe and classify galaxies and more specifically the Milky Way Galaxy.
Science Lab- Last week we met with our first grade science buddies and we built Kool-aid rockets. We predicted how far we thought the rocket would fly. This week, the students will be trying to solve a problem with a string! I will send your child home with two strings to have you try to solve the problem with the string as well.
Social Studies- The students will be able to explain how the first Americans may have arrived in the Western Hemisphere. The students will be able to identify important features of the Olmec, the Maya, the Mound Builders, and the Anasazi cultures. The students will be able to describe how the Anasazi adapted to and modified their environment. The student swill be able to describe the ways in which the Aztec adapted to and modified their environment to meet their needs. The students will be able to identify features of the Aztec and Inca empires.
Reading- We will be taking an EOS (End of Selection) Test on “The Hot and Cold Summer”, Wednesday. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the Vocabulary presented in the story.
On Thursday, we will begin reading, “Sees Behind Trees”, which falls in the genre of Historical Fiction.
Language Arts- Word Study- Word Study will begin next week. The students have completed their diagnostic tests and I am working on placing them into their learning groups!
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 1. This test will be on Friday.
In Grammar, the students will be investigating complete subjects and predicates as well as simple subjects and predicates and identifying them in their sentences. The students will be identifying and writing complete subjects, complete predicates, simple subjects and simple predicates. The students will be identifying subjects in imperative sentences.
Physical Education/Health- This week we participate in skill assessment activities and we investigate and participate in President’s Physical Fitness Testing. We continue to delve into the game of Basketball, reviewing rules, regulations and working on basic skills.
Music- Students will create musical goals for the school year. Band students will rehearse pages 8-12 and review the use of Google Classroom for Band.
Spanish- Students will learn to pray to the Hail Mary and greet each other in Spanish.
Technology- The students will compose an email using their gmail account and send to Miss Grimm. The students will also create a I AM Poem.
Art- Students will be encouraged to work in their own style in order to allow for self-expression by mirroring how they see themselves in the creation of a self-portrait.
