Hello Everyone!
I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend.
Fifth Grade did an amazing job last week with their School-wide Mass! Way to go!!!
I have not had any volunteers step forward for this position so I am posting it again this week in hopes that a parent will step forward. PTO is looking for a 5th grade parent representative! If your schedule allows you to make this commitment, it would be greatly appreciated! Please contact me and let me know if you would like to fill this position.
This week the students will need to wear their Mass uniform on Wednesday(for School Picture Day) and Thursday (for Mass) this week.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- We will be taking our Chapter 2 Test tomorrow. The students will be learning how the Church celebrates the Seven Sacraments. They will be able to identify the Seven Sacraments. They will understand that the Sacraments are a special sign of God's love.
Math-We will also be preparing for our Chapter 1 Test on Place Value. Then we will be learning about Multiplication, the terms and how to write addition problems as multiplication sentences.
Science-The students have been working on outlining Chapter 2 Lesson 1. They are doing an excellent job with their new outlining skill. We are going to be learning more about the process of Mitosis. We will also be learning about Animal Growth andReproduction. More specifically we will be learning about the process of mitosis, regeneration, asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction.
Science Lab-Tomorrow we will be doing a Chemistry Lab where we melt styrofoam. The students will complete this lab outside because of the fumes. Once the students have completed their lab report they will be able to mold their melted styrofoam into a shape. (Please don't tell the students, its a surprise!)
Social Studies-We will be learning about the Native Americans of the Woodlands. The students will find out how the Penobscot, Natchez and Hodenosaunee used their environment to enrich their lives. They will also learn about the Clan Mothers, Iroquois Confederacy and the Grand Council.
Reading-We will continue reading the story called "Dear Mrs. Parks." Each student will be writing a letter asking for advice from Mrs. Parks.
The students were amazed at Rosa Parks age and they determined that she would have been 100 years old this year!
Language Arts-The students will begin sorting their words by each feature, daily. This will help the students to determine what sound to listen for and what they should write when identifying other words that also have the same feature.
In Grammar, we will be learning how to identify simple and compound sentences using the coordinating conjunctions. We will also be learning about complex sentences and subordinating conjunctions. The students will be able to identify sentence fragments and run-ons, and correct them. The students will also be learning how to diagram sentences.
Physical Education/Health- We will continue to explore different types of exercise. We will work on conditioning and flexibility exercises. Rotation stations which highlight a particular group of muscle groups, particular type of exercise will make up a fun and engaging obstacle course for the students. Soccer will be our game of the week.
Spanish- In Spanish we will learn the song, “Cabeza, rodillas, hombros y pies” to help us learn the different body parts. We will use Quizlet flashcards to review body parts and write correctly. We will continue to select numbers 1- 50 through Scatter.
Music-Students will review notes B-A-G on recorder and learn tone and rhythm on the recorder.
Technology-We will be continuing the classroom olympics and learning how to record our data into a spreadsheet.
Art- The 5th graders enjoyed discussing Leonardo Da Vinci’s portrait of the Mona Lisa. We discussed the history behind it and speculations of where her smile comes from. This week we will continue working on self portraits and using mirrors to achieve a likeness.
I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend.
