Hello Everyone!
I hope that everyone had an enjoyable weekend. Just a reminder we will be having several tests this week, so please make sure that your students are prepared. I just wanted to give you a heads up that fifth grade is in charge of the School Mass on September 19th, at 10:15 AM. If you are able to join us for Mass, I know your students would be so excited. Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- We are learning about how Jesus shares his mission with each of us. The students will be gaining an understanding of our relationship with Jesus, understanding how we can proclaim the Good News, identifying the reasons why we celebrate the Paschal Mystery in the liturgy and to learning about the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy.
Math- We will be learning how to add three or more addends, with regrouping, subtract whole numbers and money amounts with zeros in the minuend, add or subtract numbers through hundred thousands and money amounts up to five digits and reading and writing Roman numerals through thousands. We will be preparing for our first math test next week.
Science- This week we are learning about how our body systems work together. The students will find out what the structure and function of the bones are, and how all of our systems (Skeletal, Muscular and Nervous) work together. Ask your students to identify a hinge, immovable and a ball and socket joint on the body.
Science Lab- Today, we worked on learning and applying the Scientific Method using an m & m Lab. The students had to identify the purpose of the lab, which was "How many of each color of m&m's are in a bag?" Next, the students had to do research and determine what they knew about their bag of m & m's. Then the students had to develop their hypothesis and perform the experiment. The students were then able to analyze their results by using a graph. Finally, the students wrote their conclusion, by applying the data that they acquired through this lab they were able to determine if their hypothesis was true or false.
Social Studies- We will be learning about the Inca Civilization and reviewing Chapter 1 to prepare for our test on Thursday. On Friday, we will begin studying the Native Americans of the Southwest. The students will find out how the Hopi and the Navajo used their environment to enrich their lives.
Reading- We will continue reading the story called "Sees Behind Trees." We will also continue working on writing a Narrative Paragraph about a person from colonial times who came to America on a boat, with or without their family, with limited funds and luggage.
Language Arts- The students will begin sorting their words by each feature, daily. This will help the students to determine what sound to listen for and what they should write when identifying other words that also have the same feature.
In Grammar, we will be learning how to identify subjects in imperative sentences. The students will be learning how to identify simple subjects or predicates in a compound subject or predicate. Write simple subjects or predicates to complete compound subjects or predicates and combine sentences by forming compound subjects or predicates. The students will also be learning how to diagram sentences.
Physical Education/Health-
Personal Hygiene
Conflict resolution
Spanish- The students will continue to identify and recite the Spanish Alphabet. They will also learn an alphabet song.
Music- Students will begin playing recorder this week. Please be sure to have your recorder and folder for music class on Friday.
Technology- We will be doing classroom olympics and learning how to record our data into a spreadsheet.
Art- The students made a portfolio cover to keep all their art work together.
