I hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter Break! I know I enjoyed relaxing and working in my garden.
May's Book Report is going to be on a Fantasy! Details will come home on Thursday!
We will be visiting Pamplin Park for our big field trip this year! Details were sent home before break, with your child. The cost for students is $26 this includes the Park as well as the chartered bus.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will hear about Mary's visit with her cousin Elizabeth. They will explore why Mary is the greatest of all saints. The students will learn to appreciate Mary's role in our lives and in the Church. The students will be able to highlight and explain the ways that the Church honors Mary through her various feast days.
Math- The students will learn to write zeros as placeholders in decimal products. They will investigate how to divide decimals and whole numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. They will also learn how to divide decimals by 1-digit whole numbers and use zeros as placeholders in the quotient or dividend. Then they will apply their estimation skills by estimating decimal quotients.
Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises G.1-G.10 and I.1-I.5 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.
Science- The students will be comparing three types of fossil fuels. Describe the formation of coal. Explain where petroleum and natural gas are found and how they are retrieved from the environment.
Science Lab- Today, the students learned about the Solar System. They were able to determine what a can of soda would feel like if it was on each planet as well as our moon and the dwarf planet, pluto. We also made a model of our solar system using different items like a basketball, golf ball, black bean, and even a bell.
Social Studies- The students will be able to describe the purpose and location of Spanish settlements in New Mexico. They will be able to Analyze the conflict between the Pueblo and the Spanish. The students will be able to explain the reasons for Spain's decision to expand its settlements to Texas and California. Finally the students will analyze the importance of New France's fur trade to traders and trappers.
Reading- We are reading “Frindle” which is a realistic fiction written by Andrew Clements.
Language Arts- In Vocabulary, the students will be working on Unit 15.
In Word Study-
Pink Group- Sorting based on the R-influenced O in the first or second accented syllables. 2 oddballs- sorry and reward
Yellow Group-Sorting based off of the -ed sound.
Blue Group-Sorting words based on their Latin Roots bene-, mal-,and prefixes ante-, post-.
In Grammar, the students will be able to identify correctly written sentences, use correct capitalization and punctuation in sentences and write four kinds of sentences. The students will also be learning how to identify and write proper nouns and proper adjectives correctly, correct errors in capitalization and write sentences using proper nouns and proper adjectives. We are also using our Total Participation Techniques on the IXL Language Arts Website in class.
Physical Education/Health- Games which involve cooperation, problem solving and teamwork will challenge our learner s this week. Students will investigate decision making as it affects their life choices in relation to drugs, alcohol, smoking and peer pressure.
Music- Students will discuss the composer Camille Saint-Saens and the movement Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals. We will describe the music using descriptive musical and nonmusical words and create a story using the words.
Spanish - We will write and read animal words, recognize and recite likes and Dislikes (Me gusta or No me gusta) and listen to the song De colores:

Technology- Will not have class due to Standardized Testing.
Art- Students will be continuing to work on their colonial landscape paintings.
