Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend!

Thank you to everyone who came out to volunteer for the various booths at Fun Day on Friday! The students said they had a BLAST!!!

Yearbooks are on sale in the school office for $25 each.

We will be having Mass on Wednesday. Please do not drop your students off for Mass at Saint Paul's Catholic Church on Wednesday. You will need to stay with your students for Mass and the Awards Ceremony.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be learning more about the sacrament of Holy Orders and learning about the Pentecost.

Math- This week the students will be exploring measurement. Please encourage your students to use IXL this Summer.

Science- The students will be learning about the three properties of matter.

Science Lab- The students will be participating in several different science experiments this week. Today, we made oobleck (slime). The students really enjoyed this although they thought it was messy.

Social Studies- The students will be working on their Studies Weekly Newspaper.

Reading- The students will be given an opportunity to play their awesome Game Board Book reports.

Language Arts- The students will be given a Word Study Final Assessment.

Physical Education/Health- No Class this week.

Music- No Class this week.

Spanish - Listen to the traditional Mexican song Las mañanitas a popular birthday song and The students will try to fill in the blanks of missing words. They will continue with cursive writing and drawings.

Technology- Students will be introduced to Edmodo. The students will work on their states and capitals by using an interactive game.

Art- Students will prepare to bring home art portfolios in which to store their art. If time allows, we will fill them this week and send them home!

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be learning more about Matrimony and about the various types of families. The students will also be learning more about Holy Orders and how jesus shared his mission with the apostles. The students will be able to understand the importance of the Sacrament of Holy orders and that it is a sacrament of service to others.

Math- This week the students will be exploring measurement. They will be able to convert small measures into larger measures by dividing the rule. They will also be able to convert larger measures by multiplying the rule. The students will be learning about the various time zones this week too!

Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises W.1-W.10 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.

Science- The students will be exploring more about the oceans. They will be able to identify the different ways in which we study our oceans. They will also be identifying the resources that we can find in the oceans.

Science Lab- The students will be learning more about rockets. We will be making two different types of rockets and then comparing them to the one that we made in Technology Class. We will be doing other types of science labs this week as well.

Social Studies- The students will be finishing up their States and Capitals Quizzes. They will be learning more about the Constitution and Bill of rights. They will also be identifying the three branches of the United States. We will be revisiting the Louisiana Purchase as well as the War of 1812.

Reading- We are reading “Lewis and Clark”, which is an Expository Nonfiction story by R. Conrad Stein. The students did a wonderful job on all their Game Board Book reports and are really enjoying the opportunity to play them with their classmates.

Language Arts- Vocabulary-We are reviewing the vocabulary words that have been presented this year.

Word Study-

Blue group- Will be sorting based on Latin Roots (gen, mort, bio).

Yellow Group- Will be sorting based on the Long-a Homophones.

Pink Group- Will be sorting based off of Prefix Assimilation (For example: in-, im-, il-,and ir).

In Grammar, the students will be learning more about words that are often misspelled. They will learn to distinguish between the spelling and meaning as to not confuse them in the future. The students will write a response to a joke using homophones. They will also be reviewing Unit 6.

Physical Education/Health- Students will participate in: Beach Ball Volleyball Skill Drills and Beach Ball Volleyball game.

Music- Students will identify, analyze and describe instruments and instrument families using musictechteacher.com.

Spanish - The students will identify and pronounce the alphabet. They will learn to retain the information through drawings in cursive.

Technology- Students will be introduced to Edmodo. The students will work on their states and capitals by using an interactive game.

Art- Students will prepare to bring home art portfolios in which to store their art. If time allows, we will fill them this week and send them home!

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend!

Thursday, we will be having Mass at 10 AM with Father Brian.

May's Book Report is due on Friday, May 30th!

Friday, May 30th, the Fifth grade have been invited to the Beach Party sponsored by SAC. It will begin at 3PM and end at 6:15 PM. The cost is $5 and your favorite snack to share.

Later that evening, is the 5th grade's Lock-in. Please fill out and return your lock-in permission slips. They are due tomorrow.

Fun Day is next Friday, June 6th.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be able to understand that good friendships help us to live as disciples of Christ. The students will be able to discuss vocations for different people. The students will be preparing for Chapter 23. Then the students will be learning about the Sacrament of Matrimony. The students will be exploring the meaning and celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony. The students will be able to explain that the marriage covenant is built on Christ's love for the Church.

Math- This week the students will be exploring translations (such as a slide, flip and turn) and tesselations. They will be determining which polygons can tesselate. Then the students will be preparing for their Chapter 10 Test. We will begin working on measuring Area and Volume.

Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises B.1-B.33 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.

Science- The students will be exploring the oceans. The students will learn how waves move, what causes ocean currents and what causes tides. The students will identify how ocean waves and currents shape the shore and how human activities can change the shore.

Science Lab- 

Social Studies- The students will be identifying the contributions of notable individuals diuring the Revolutionary period. They will be able to identify the purposes and explain the importance of the Declaration of Independence and summarize the main points of the Declaration of Independence.

Reading- We are reading “What's the Big Idea, Ben Franklin?”, which is a Biography by Jean Fritz.

Language Arts- Vocabulary-Unit 18

Word Study-

Blue group- will be sorting based on the Greek and Latin Roots (terr, astr/aster, aer, hydra/hydro).

Yellow Group-Will be sorting based on the Long-i and the Long -o Homophones.

Pink Group-Will be sorting based off of the Schwa + r and r-influenced e in Accented Syllables. (For example: er, ear, and ere).

In Grammar, the students will continue learning about quotation marks that are placed around a speakers words. The students will learn to use correct punctuation as well as learn to apply quotation marks to a conversation. The students will also be learning words that are often misspelled. They will learn to distinguish between the spelling and meaning as to not confuse them in the future. The students will write a response to a joke using homophones.

Physical Education/Health- Students will participate in Beach Ball Volleyball Skill Drills and Beach Ball Volleyball game.

Music- Students will perform their dramatized stories for Camille Saint-Saens’ Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals.

Spanish - The students will learn vocabulary that pertains to things found in a city.

Technology- Students will be typing their Memorial Day Writing Assignment about their Heroes. On Thursday, Fifth Grade will launch their rockets. The students will work on their states and capitals by using an interactive game. The students will work on geometry skills utilizing IXL.

Art- No Art class this week due to Memorial Day.

Hello Everyone!

Monday is our field trip to Pamplin Park!

Tuesday, we will be dismissing at noon.

Wednesday, we will be having Mass at 10 AM with Father Ken.

May's Book Report is going to be on a Fantasy Book and it is due on Friday, May 30th!

Next Friday, May 30th, the Fifth grade have been invited to the Beach Party sponsored by SAC. It will begin at 3PM and end at 6:15 PM. The cost is $5 and your favorite snack to share.

Later that evening, is the 5th grade's Lock-in. Information will be included in the Thursday folders.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be able to explain that we are called to Jesus' disciples. They will be able to explore some ways to serve God and the Church. Finally, we will be able to thank God for the example of women and men in religious life and to describe the religious life as a service to God and neighbor.

Math- This week the students will be exploring circles. They will be learning how to use a compass and find the Circumference of a circle. The students will learn that the Circumference is about equal to three times the diameter. We will also be exploring lines of symmetry and identifying many objects that have various lines of symmetry.

Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises B.1-B.33 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.

Science- The students will be reviewing weather and climate information for their test on Friday.

Science Lab- The students will be presented with an empty jar. Then the students will hypothesize what they think is in the jar, once it has been filled up. The students will then learn that there is an item in the jar submersed by vegetable oil. The density of the vegetable oil prevents the glass beaker from being seen. This Lab demonstration is called the disappearing beaker.

Social Studies- The students will be learning about the causes and effects of the American Revolution, especially, the Boston Tea Party and the Intolerable Acts. The students will also be exposed to political cartoons and how to interpret them. The students will then learn about the American Revolution.

Reading- We are reading the play “Name that American” which was written by Hannah Reinmuth.

Language Arts- Vocabulary-none this week

Word Study- None this week. However, the students will be given their words on Friday for next week.

In Grammar, the students will continue using commas to separate words in a series, correct the use of commas in a series and combine sentences by putting words or phrases in a series. The students will also use commas with introductory words, interjections, direct address, and introductory prepositional phrases, correct errors in the use of commas and write sentences using introductory words, interjections, direct address, introductory prepositional phrases and tag questions. We are also using our Total Participation Techniques on the IXL Language Arts Website in class.

Physical Education/Health- Students will participate in: Beach Ball Volleyball Skill Drills and Beach Ball Volleyball game.

Music- Students will continue to plan and prepare to dramatize their stories for Camille Saint-Saens’ Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals.

Spanish - The students will continue with the theme about “La naturaleza” (Nature) and write sentences.

Technology- Students will be creating rockets and utilizing NASA's website to determine what size wings and cones will be needed for their rocket. The students will work on geometry skills utilizing IXL.

Art- No Art class this week due to Field Trip.

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend! I hope all of the 5th grade mom's had a wonderful Mother's Day!

May 15th at 9:30 we will be celebrating our school-wide May Procession followed by the Fifth grade mass at 10 AM.  Students are asked to bring in a flower for Mary.

We will be visiting Pamplin Park on Monday May 19th!

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be exploring the virtue of love that enables us to love God and others. We are also able to demonstrate out love for God and one another through the virtue of love. The students will also emphasize that the saints are examples for living the virtues of faith, hope and love. We will complete the Project Disciples and the Chapter 22 Review to prepare for our test on Thursday.

Math- This week the students will be exploring polygons, identifying congruent and similar figures, classifying triangles and developing an understanding that all triangles “angles” measure 180 degrees. They will also be learning about quadrilaterals and identifying the diagonals of polygons. They will develop an understanding that the sum of the angles of a quadrilateral is 360 degrees. The students will begin applying the formula for determining the Perimeter of a Polygon.

Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises B.1-G.33 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.

Science- The students will be learning more about the weather and climate. They will also understand how clouds form. Today, we made a cloud identification guide that will help us to study for our test as well as identify clouds in the sky. The students will also be learning about the uneven heating of earth's surface, better known as wind. They will be exploring earth's wind patterns. They will also find out what determines a climate as well as how human activity can affect it.

Science Lab- The students continued creating their own biodegradable plastic. They will be determining which type of plastic biodegradable or non-biodegradable is better for the environment. We also tasted the plastic! Don't worry, it is made out of corn starch, corn oil and water! Be sure to ask your students about their hypothesis. Today, we used two black blocks and put ice on them to see which would melt faster. One of the blocks was made from aluminum and the other is made from plastic. Ask your student which one melted more quickly. We also made a cloud identification guide that will help us to study for our tests but also identify clouds in the sky.

Social Studies- Finally, the students will analyze the events that led up to the end of the French and Indian War. The students will understand the importance of leadership at all levels in a democratic society. Then they will explain the
advantages and disadvantages of using mediation to resolve conflicts. We will be wrapping up Chapter 8 and preparing for the test this week. We will be focusing on identifying the main idea and supporting details.

Reading- We are reading “Across the Wide Dark Sea which is a Historical Fiction story written by Jean Van Leeuwen.

Language Arts- In Vocabulary, the students will be working on Unit 17.

In Word Study-

Pink Group- Sorting based on words with er, ir, ur and two oddballs (spirit and every)

Yellow Group-Sorting based off of the long-E Homophones with three oddballs (seize, scene and suite)

Blue Group-Sorting words based on their Greek and Latin Elements related to the body cap, corp, dent/dont, ped/pod

Fifth Grade is in charge of mass next week.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will complete the Unit 3 Chapter Review. We will be studying and identifying the Theological Virtues students will also be introduced to the Cardinal Virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance). The students will gain a greater understanding of the eight Beatitudes. We will be working on a special mother's day surprise!

Math- The students will be reviewing for their chapter 9 test on multiplying and dividing decimals. The students will learn about how to measure and classify angles. They will also be introduced to perpendicular lines and intersecting lines. They will play a game of “Miss Grimm says” regarding angles and intersecting lines.

Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises B.1-G.33 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.

Science- The students will be learning more about the weather and climate. The students will be able to identify the various weather instruments that are used to predict the weather. The students will be able to explain the difference between a tornado or hurricane watch or warning. They will also understand how clouds form.

Reading- We are reading “The Fun They Had” which is a scientific fiction written by Isaac Asimov. We will also be starting “Across the Wide Dark Sea which is a Historical Fiction story written by Jean Van Leeuwen.

Language Arts- In Vocabulary, the students will be working on Unit 16.

In Word Study-

Pink Group- Sorting based on words with w or /w/ sound before the vowel

Yellow Group-Sorting based off of the long-A Homophones

Blue Group-Sorting words based on their Greek and Latin Elements Magni, min, poly, equ, and omni.

In Grammar, the students will be able to write abbreviations for days, months, names, addresses and businesses. They will be able to correct errors in abbreviations and write messages using abbreviations. They will also be able to write titles of books, magazines, newspapers, short stories, book chapters, articles, songs and poems correctly. Finally they will be able to correct errors in the capitalization and treatment of titles. We are also using our Total Participation Techniques on the IXL Language Arts Website in class.

Physical Education/Health- Students will participate in: Fitness Testing Students will be actively engaged in Corn Hole Games and Croquet Games.

Music- Students will finish creating their stories using the words to describe Camille Saint-Saens’ Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals. Students will also dramatize their stories and add musical instruments.

Spanish - We will write and read animal words, recognize and recite likes and Dislikes (Me gusta or No me gusta) and listen to the song De colores:

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Easter Break! I know I enjoyed relaxing and working in my garden.

May's Book Report is going to be on a Fantasy! Details will come home on Thursday!

We will be visiting Pamplin Park for our big field trip this year! Details were sent home before break, with your child. The cost for students is $26 this includes the Park as well as the chartered bus.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will hear about Mary's visit with her cousin Elizabeth. They will explore why Mary is the greatest of all saints. The students will learn to appreciate Mary's role in our lives and in the Church. The students will be able to highlight and explain the ways that the Church honors Mary through her various feast days.

Math- The students will learn to write zeros as placeholders in decimal products. They will investigate how to divide decimals and whole numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. They will also learn how to divide decimals by 1-digit whole numbers and use zeros as placeholders in the quotient or dividend. Then they will apply their estimation skills by estimating decimal quotients.

Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises G.1-G.10 and I.1-I.5 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.

Science- The students will be comparing three types of fossil fuels. Describe the formation of coal. Explain where petroleum and natural gas are found and how they are retrieved from the environment.

Science Lab- Today, the students learned about the Solar System. They were able to determine what a can of soda would feel like if it was on each planet as well as our moon and the dwarf planet, pluto. We also made a model of our solar system using different items like a basketball, golf ball, black bean, and even a bell.

Social Studies- The students will be able to describe the purpose and location of Spanish settlements in New Mexico. They will be able to Analyze the conflict between the Pueblo and the Spanish. The students will be able to explain the reasons for Spain's decision to expand its settlements to Texas and California. Finally the students will analyze the importance of New France's fur trade to traders and trappers.

Reading- We are reading “Frindle” which is a realistic fiction written by Andrew Clements.

Language Arts- In Vocabulary, the students will be working on Unit 15.

In Word Study-

Pink Group- Sorting based on the R-influenced O in the first or second accented syllables. 2 oddballs- sorry and reward

Yellow Group-Sorting based off of the -ed sound.

Blue Group-Sorting words based on their Latin Roots bene-, mal-,and prefixes ante-, post-.

In Grammar, the students will be able to identify correctly written sentences, use correct capitalization and punctuation in sentences and write four kinds of sentences. The students will also be learning how to identify and write proper nouns and proper adjectives correctly, correct errors in capitalization and write sentences using proper nouns and proper adjectives. We are also using our Total Participation Techniques on the IXL Language Arts Website in class.

Physical Education/Health- Games which involve cooperation, problem solving and teamwork will challenge our learner s this week. Students will investigate decision making as it affects their life choices in relation to drugs, alcohol, smoking and peer pressure.

Music- Students will discuss the composer Camille Saint-Saens and the movement Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals. We will describe the music using descriptive musical and nonmusical words and create a story using the words.

Spanish - We will write and read animal words, recognize and recite likes and Dislikes (Me gusta or No me gusta) and listen to the song De colores:

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had a great weekend! I hope everyone has a wonderful Holy Week!

If you have an extra Palm from mass yesterday and you would like to send it in to class tomorrow. If not that is okay, I managed to pick up a few extras at mass yesterday. I will teach the students one way to weave their palms. (I learned this from my 8th Grade teacher Sr. Marita Ann.)

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be able to identify and explain that Mary was open to God's call. They will also develop an understanding as to why Mary is the most blessed of women. The students will hear about Mary's visit with her cousin Elizabeth.

Math- The students will be multiplying decimals by whole numbers and decimals by decimals. The students can use models to multiply decimals by decimals, this will help the students to visualize their answers.

Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises G.1-G.10 and I.1-I.5 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.

Science- The students will be learning about what natural resources are and why some natural resources might get used up. Distinguish between renewable and nonrenewable resources. Compare three types of fossil fuels. Describe the formation of coal. Explain where petroleum and natural gas are found.

Science Lab- The students will be learning about our environment and the Watersheds in it. We will be completing the Crumpled paper lab on Tuesday. Make sure to ask them about it tomorrow.

Social Studies- The students will be able to analyze the structures of colonial government. The students will be taking the Chapter 7 Test on Wednesday!

Reading- We are reading “Frindle” which is a realistic fiction written by Andrew Clements.

Language Arts-

In Grammar, the students will be learning about Using Homophones and review Unit 5. We are also using our Total Participation Techniques on the IXL Language Arts Website in class.

Physical Education/Health- Will not have class due to Easter Break.

Spanish - The students will be able to make observations of diverse ways that Holy Week is celebrated in Guatemala and Spain.

April's Book Report is on a Biography Book and it is Due on Friday, April 11, 2014!

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be taking their Chapter 18 Test on Thursday! The students will be reflecting on the power and presence of God in the celebration of the Anointing of the Sick. The students will also prepare for their Chapter 18 Test by completing a chapter review. Then students will be able to identify and explain that Mary was open to God's call.

Math- The students will be reviewing addition and subtracting decimals. We will be taking a Test on Chapter 8 on Wednesday! The students will be learning how to multiply decimals by 10, 100 and 1000. They will also be learning how to estimate using rounding and clustering.

Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises E.1-E.6 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.

Science- The students will be learning about how the Earth's surface features have changed over millions of years. They will also find out how fossils help scientists to learn about plants and animals of the past. The Unit C Chapter 1 Test will be on Friday.

Science Lab- The students will be learning about Weather! Today the students learned about weather instruments that are used to measure the weather around us. Tomorrow, the students will be creating their own clouds to help identify the different types that they may see in the sky.

Social Studies- The students are learning about the colonial governments and they will be able to explain why American colonists began to develop their own governments. Then the students will be able to analyze the structures of colonial government.

Reading- We are reading “Dear Mr. Henshaw” which is a realistic fiction written by Beverly Cleary. The students will be taking a Test on this story on Tuesday.

Language Arts- The students will be learning new Word Study words this week to help the students to spell based off of the main features included in their word lists.

This week we will not be having a new vocabulary unit. We will be working on several skills in our Vocabulary books. There will not be a Vocabulary Test this week. Please encourage your child to visit website for activities to strengthen their vocabulary skills.

In Grammar, the students will be learning about Contractions with Pronouns, Pronouns and Antecedents and Using Homophones. We are also using our Total Participation Techniques on the IXL Language Arts Website in class.

Physical Education/Health- Students will continue to explore human growth and development. Students will also investigate the game of "Horseshoes".

Music- Students will continue to explore the song game “Little Sally Walker” using movement.

Spanish - The students will be able to start a new unit, “En el campo” (In the Country) and identify working vehicles, people, and things found in the country.

Technology- This week in Technology, the students will be working on building rockets, finishing up their Character Scrapbooks and typing their president paragraphs. Then the students will continue working on IXL and Videotaping their commercials in the broadcasting studio.

Art- Students will be finishing their United States Art work.

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

I wanted to give everyone a heads up that Mass will be on Wednesday at 10:15 AM. Please wear your church uniforms.

April's Book Report is on a Biography Book!

Stepping Up Day for Fifth Grade Starts Tomorrow! The Parents and Student sessions will be Wednesday, April 2nd! Please try to join us!!!

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be taking their Chapter 17 Test Tomorrow! The students will be learning about the actual celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The students will develop an understanding that Jesus is with us when we are suffering. The students will explore the meaning of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. They will be able to describe the Church's celebration of the Anointing of the Sick.

Math- The students will be Subtracting Decimals. We will be subtracting decimals through the thousandths, as well as using front-end estimation and rounding. We will be taking a Test on Chapter 8, next Tuesday!

Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises E.1-E.6 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.

Science- The students will be learning about the Changes to Earth's Surface. They will be learning how Earth's crust is broken down into soil and how water, wind and ices changes landforms as well as the Layers of the earth. Today, we sang the layers of the earth song!

Science Lab- The students will be learning about Electricity! The students will be creating series circuits and parallel circuits as well as using three different electromagnets. The students will be identifying the two different types of circuits tomorrow.

Social Studies- The students are learning about the colonial economies, the students will be looking for economic patterns and major industries of colonial America. We will also evaluate the effects of supply and demand. Then the students will describe the development of the free enterprise system in colonial America.

Reading- We are reading “Dear Mr. Henshaw” which is a realistic fiction written by Beverly Cleary. The students will be taking a Test on this story on Thursday.

Language Arts- The students will be learning new Word Study words this week to help the students to spell based off of the main features included in their word lists.

Spanish - The students will continue to identify and label in Spanish things used for communication. They will watch a short video about the invention of books.

Technology- This week in Technology, the students will be working on blogging, exploring a few webquests, finishing up their Character Scrapbooks and typing their president paragraphs. Then the students will continue working on IXL and Videotaping their commercials in the broadcasting studio.

Art- Students will be introduced to NASA Langley Research Center’s Art Contest “The Future Is Now”. Please Sign and Return the Permission Slips for the NASA Poster Contest.
