Hello Everyone!
I hope everyone had a great weekend!
I can't believe all of the snow predictions for this week! Cross your fingers that it doesn't stick!
I wanted to give everyone a heads up that we will be having Mass on Thursday at 10 AM. Please wear your church uniforms.
Saint Jude Hospital Math-A-Thon Starts on February 12th! There will be a Math Booklet that the students will be working on in class, that will come home at the end of the Math-A-Thon!
Don't forget to bring your valentines to school on Friday for Valentine's Day!
Grandparents Day is on Friday! Please wear your church uniforms! If they are not able to attend they can send a letter to their grandchild. Please make sure it is addressed to the Student with their first and last name and grade on the envelope. If your child's grandparent or proxy is attending, please let me know. (we are trying to get a head count). There is a sign-up sheet on Schoolspeak if you would like to send in breakfast items for the grandparents.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students are learning more about prayer. Their are five types of prayer and the students will be exploring how to write each type of prayer. The students will be taking their test on this chapter on Wednesday. The song that we will be singing for Grandparents Day is on my class website if anyone would like to practice.
Math- We are working on multiplying fractions by fractions, fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by fractions. The students are learning how to multiply fractions using the GCF and utilizing cross multiplication. Next, we will be renaming mixed numbers as fractions and then multiplying fractions by mixed numbers, mixed numbers by fractions, mixed numbers by mixed numbers and mixed numbers by whole numbers and vice versa. Towards the end of the week we will be starting division of fractions.
Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises N.1-N.16 are all excellent choices for practice this week.
Science- The students will be taking a test on Unit B Chapter 2 Tomorrow. The Quizlet link is... http://quizlet.com/_lhszl.
Then we will start Chapter 3 which is a short chapter on Biomes. The students will be learning about Earth's biomes and how plants and animals are adapted for the particular biome in which they live in.
Science Lab- Today in Science Lab, the students reviewed the parts of a plant and animal cell by making edible cells. The students really enjoyed this lab and I heard a student say that “we need more of these edible labs.” We used graham crackers, icing, twizzlers pull and peals, M & M's and jelly beans to make our cells. The students did an outstanding job and were able to eat their cells when they had finished!
Social Studies- We will be learning about how England found colonies in North America. This week we will be exploring Plymouth Colony. The students will be learning about the Mayflower Compact and the First Thanksgiving. The students will be able to identify the ways in which the Native Americans were able to help the English survive during their first years in the Americas.
Reading- We are reading “Hattie's Birthday Box” which is a Short Story written by Pam Conrad. The students will be taking a Test on this story on Tomorrow. Then we will be starting the Biography “William Shakespeare & the Globe” by Aliki.
Language Arts- The students will be learning new Word Study words this week to help the students to spell based off of the main features included in their word lists.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 10. Please encourage your child to visit website for activities to strengthen their vocabulary skills.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and prepositions. This week, they will be working on Comparing with adjectives. The students will be working on remembering the rules for comparing adjectives. Rules: Use either -er or more to compare two people, places things, or ideas and -est or most is used when you are comparing more than two items.
Physical Education/Health- Students will investigate and participate in heart healthy exercises, relays and games. We will participate in a hockey shoot out! We will also continue to explore the Winter Olympic Games!
