I hope that you enjoyed your snow-cation!! I am sure that all of the kids had a blast enjoying our “Winter Blast.”
I wanted to give everyone a heads up that we will be having Mass on Wednesday at 10 AM.
Saint Jude Hospital Math-A-Thon Starts on February 12th! There will be a Math Booklet that the students will be working on in class, that will come home at the end of the Math-A-Thon!
Grandparents Day is quickly approaching! All grandparents are invited to join us here at PCRS on Friday, February 14th! If they are not able to attend they can send a letter to their grandchild. Please make sure it is addressed to the Student with their first and last name and grade on the envelope.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students are learning more about prayer. Their are five types of prayer and the students will be exploring how to write each type of prayer.
Math- We are reviewing for the Chapter 5 Test that will be on Wednesday. Please encourage your students to simplify. Sometimes they get the Greatest Common Factor confused with the Least Common Denominator. Then we will begin multiplying fractions!
Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises L.1-L.5 are all excellent choices for practice this week.
Science-The students are learning about the main causes of extinction of plants and animals. The students will be learning about several species that were able to be saved by new laws being created and sanctuaries that were put into place to protect these animals.
Science Lab- Today in Science Lab the students learned about light and how it reflects and how it is absorbed. We used fog in a can to fog up the classroom so that we would use laser lights to see how light can bend using mirrors and a prism.
Social Studies-We will be learning about how England found colonies in North America. They will be exploring the settlement of Jamestown and Roanoke.
Reading-We are reading “The Case of the Flying Saucer People” which is a mystery written by Seymour Simon. The students will be taking a Test on this story on Tomorrow.
Language Arts-The students will be learning new Word Study words this week to help the students to spell based off of the main features included in their word lists.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 9. Please encourage your child to visit website for activities to strengthen their vocabulary skills.
In Grammar, the students will be beginning to learn about adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and prepositions. They will be identifying the adjectives that describe the nouns in a variety of sentences.
Physical Education/Health- Students will participate in conditioning activities, cooperative games and continue their exploration of the heart and circulatory system. We will also continue our investigation into the Winter Olympic Games!
Music- Students will create winter haikus and set them to music.
Spanish- The students will be able to recognize and use pronouns and conjugate some –ar verbs.
Technology- This week in Technology, the students will continue working on their I am Poems, IXL, Videotaping their commercials in the broadcasting studio and the webquest on the Moon.
Art- Students will be continue working on map project. Once map is transferred students may begin collecting images and gluing onto project.
