Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will be learning more about Matrimony and about the various types of families. The students will also be learning more about Holy Orders and how jesus shared his mission with the apostles. The students will be able to understand the importance of the Sacrament of Holy orders and that it is a sacrament of service to others.
Math- This week the students will be exploring measurement. They will be able to convert small measures into larger measures by dividing the rule. They will also be able to convert larger measures by multiplying the rule. The students will be learning about the various time zones this week too!
Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises W.1-W.10 are all excellent choices for practice this week. We are trying to complete over 35,000 math problems as a class.
Science- The students will be exploring more about the oceans. They will be able to identify the different ways in which we study our oceans. They will also be identifying the resources that we can find in the oceans.
Science Lab- The students will be learning more about rockets. We will be making two different types of rockets and then comparing them to the one that we made in Technology Class. We will be doing other types of science labs this week as well.
Social Studies- The students will be finishing up their States and Capitals Quizzes. They will be learning more about the Constitution and Bill of rights. They will also be identifying the three branches of the United States. We will be revisiting the Louisiana Purchase as well as the War of 1812.
Reading- We are reading “Lewis and Clark”, which is an Expository Nonfiction story by R. Conrad Stein. The students did a wonderful job on all their Game Board Book reports and are really enjoying the opportunity to play them with their classmates.
Language Arts- Vocabulary-We are reviewing the vocabulary words that have been presented this year.
Word Study-
Blue group- Will be sorting based on Latin Roots (gen, mort, bio).
Yellow Group- Will be sorting based on the Long-a Homophones.
Pink Group- Will be sorting based off of Prefix Assimilation (For example: in-, im-, il-,and ir).
In Grammar, the students will be learning more about words that are often misspelled. They will learn to distinguish between the spelling and meaning as to not confuse them in the future. The students will write a response to a joke using homophones. They will also be reviewing Unit 6.
Physical Education/Health- Students will participate in: Beach Ball Volleyball Skill Drills and Beach Ball Volleyball game.
Music- Students will identify, analyze and describe instruments and instrument families using musictechteacher.com.
Spanish - The students will identify and pronounce the alphabet. They will learn to retain the information through drawings in cursive.
Technology- Students will be introduced to Edmodo. The students will work on their states and capitals by using an interactive game.
Art- Students will prepare to bring home art portfolios in which to store their art. If time allows, we will fill them this week and send them home!
