Hello Everyone!
I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend.
Wednesday, fifth grade is in charge of the school liturgy and we would love it if you would be able to attend!
****It's November, and that means that it is time to begin preparing for our Pow-wow. I will be posting a sign up sheet on SchoolSpeak later on this week that will list of several items that I will need for our Pow-wow which is coming up later on this month.
Each student will need a Plain white T-shirt that we will Tie-Dye and use to create our Native American clothing, our buffalo skins. If you have a plain white T-shirt please make sure that it is at least one size larger than what your child normally wears as the shirts will shrink.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will continue learning about the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. The students will also learn that Pentecost Sunday is considered the Church's birthday. The students will be able to explain what happened on Pentecost and what stemmed from it.
Math- We will be learning about dividing money, using the order of operations and solving word problems using various strategies. We are also continuing to take our one minute multiplication quizzes. Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises H.3, H.4, H.10 and H.11 are all excellent choices for practice this week.
Science-The students will be learning more about the process of Photosynthesis. They will also learn about the different layers of leaves. The students will learn about the bi-products that are produced during the process of photosynthesis.
Today, was the first day that I had the students work on their outlines with very minimal tips from me as to what needs to be included and I must say I am very impressed! Everyone was doing an awesome job!
Science Lab- Today in class we discussed hurricanes and watched a video on them. We also plotted the path of a hurricane using the longitude and latitude of actual hurricanes. The students will be able to use this information to identify their hurricane and if it caused a lot of damage or not. They will also notice that once their hurricane makes landfall it will begin to slow down.
Social Studies-We will be continuing to learn more about how Prince Henry of Portugal aided navigation with bringing together shipbuilders, mapmakers, scientists and ship captains to create a caravel. The students will also be introduced to two important Portuguese explorers, Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco de Gama.
Reading-We are reading “Island of the Blue Dolphins” which is a Personal Narrative written by Gary Paulsen about a sled dog named Storm who would play tricks on Gary Paulsen, the author. The students are really enjoying this story. The November Book Report will be on a Fantasy book. Information on the details of the book report will be coming home soon.
Language Arts-The students will be learning new Word Study words this week to help the students to spell based off of the main features included in their word lists.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about verbs. The students will be able to identify past and present tense of verbs. We are continuing to work on the Ideas Trait, by developing strong ideas for our writing. The students are really writing some interesting stories while focusing on developing their ideas for their writing. We are also working on figurative language, specifically alliteration and similes to make our paragraphs more interesting to our readers.
Physical Education/Health- We continue to explore Volleyball skills utilizing beach balls for learning activities. We focus on serving, bumping and volleying. We will learn about game activity by playing lead up games for Volleyball. We investigate the rules and regulations for Volleyball game. We continue to investigate “rotation” on the court.
Music- Students will learn songs for the Christmas program and continue practice on the recorder.
Spanish- The students will review the days of the week with a song, write and recite the day, month and year. They will also be able to tell where they are from.
