Hello Everyone!
I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend.
I wanted to send a special thanks to all of the parents who have sent in items to create our rain sticks for the POW-WOW. The POW-WOW is next week, November 27th at 10 AM, just a reminder that day is a noon dismissal! If you have not taken the time to sign up to bring something in for the POW-WOW please sign up on SchoolSpeak.
If you have not sent in a T-shirt for your child please make sure it meets the following specifications: plain white T-shirt that is at least one size larger than what your child normally wears as the shirts will shrink.
I am looking for one parent volunteer to tie-dye the t-shirts. If you would like to earn volunteer hours for doing this for our class, please let me know.
Thursday, November 21st at 9:30 AM there will be an awards assembly for Honor Roll. Mass will begin at 10 AM, following the Awards ceremony. If you are able to join us for the Awards Assembly or Mass, please do.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will be taking their Chapter 8 Test Tomorrow on Confirmation. The students are going to be learning more information about the actual parts of the celebration of Confirmation. The students will be able to identify the symbols and actions of the celebration of Confirmation. They will also be learning about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Math- We will be learning about prime and composite numbers and prime factorization as we begin our chapter on fractions. Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises K.1 and K.2 are all excellent choices for practice this week.
Science-The students will be learning more about fertilization and pollination as wells as identifying and labeling the parts of a flower. The students will also be learning about the different methods of pollination.
Science Lab- Today in class we learned about density and I did a demonstration using diet coke and regular coke to discuss density with the students. The students had to compare both cans for similarities and differences and then we took both cans and put them in water and one sunk and one floated. Ask your students which can sunk and which can floated and why. The students also had fun playing with the density bottle. Ask them to explain the density bottle to you as well.
Social Studies-We will be learning about the Europeans and when they came to the Americas. The students will become familiar with many explorers and conquerors including Christopher Columbus, Hernando Cortes as well as others.
Reading-We are reading “Everglades” which is an Informative Text written by Jean Craighead George about children who are being told a story about how the Everglades have been affected by pollution and what they can do to help the Everglades when they get older. The November Book Report will be on a Fantasy book and the students will be creating a cereal box and then making a commercial to encourage others to “buy the cereal/read the book”.
Language Arts-The students will be learning new Word Study words this week to help the students to spell based off of the main features included in their word lists.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about verbs. The students will be able to identify future tense of verbs and linking verbs. We are continuing to work on the Ideas Trait, by developing strong ideas for our writing. Last week the students did a wonderful job writing “How to Cook a Turkey”. They were very creative and some of them were very close to how some parents may actually cook a turkey. This week the students will be working on writing Native American Tales in which they will translate them into Native American Symbols and put them one “buffalo hides”. We will be continuing to work on figurative language to make our paragraphs more interesting to our readers.
Physical Education/Health- Students will participate in fitness circuits, badminton skill drills and President’s Physical Fitness Testing.
Music- Students will learn songs for the Christmas program and continue practice on the recorder.
Spanish- The students will recognize the definite articles and the Spanish genders.
Technology- The students will be creating a Scratch animated presentation of the Seven Sacraments. When the students are finished creating their Scratch, they will present them to the class.
Art- Last week students were introduced to proper sketching techniques and drew from mannequins. These were really successful!
This week students will be introduced to the American Artist June Nam Paik tying in geography with technology.
I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend.
