I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!!
I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for all of the kind words, thoughts and prayers for my Grandma and my family this week. I really appreciate them and it means a lot to me that you all were thinking and praying for us. Thank you.
5th Grade Stepping Up to Middle School Days are today and tomorrow! Be sure to ask your child about their day.
Mass is on Wednesday, April 29th at 10 AM with Fr. Brian. Please join us if you are available. Please have your child wear his or her dress uniform.
Please remember white socks are for the P.E. Uniform only.
Field Trip Permission Slips and fees are due on Friday, May 1st.
Friday, May 1st is also Race for Education Day!
The 4th Quarter Progress Reports will be coming out on May 5th.
Scantron Testing will be from May 11th-21st.
Please do not forget that the students are required to read 10 minutes a night and do IXL for 30 minutes for the week and record it on their Logs. It counts as a quiz grade. Please assist me in helping your child become a lifelong reader. These logs are do every Monday for a quiz grade.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will be reciting the Nicene Creed. The students will be able to understand that the marriage covenant is built on Christ's love for the Church. The students will able to understand that in the Sacrament of Matrimony a man and a woman promise to always love and be true to each other and they will pray for married couples. The students will express their gratitude and support for families and determine the importance of families as a community of faith.
Math- The students will develop an understanding of a circle and all of the elements of a circle (i.e. chord, diameter, radius, center, arc.) The students will use pi to determine the Circumference of a circle. The students will identify and draw lines of symmetry. The students will explore translations, reflections and rotations of figures. The students will explore tessellations and determine which polygons tesselate.
They can work for mastery on Level G sections B.1 - B.33 on IXL. This will help your child to practice geometry. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.
Science- This week the students will be evaluated on Unit A chapter 3. then the students will be able to describe the structures and processes involved in the food making process of plants. The students will recognize that photosynthesis is an adaptive characteristic of plants that improves their ability to survive in an ecosystem. The students will conclude that plants use carbon dioxide and energy from sunlight to build molecules of sugar for growth and maintenance, and that plants release oxygen in the air. The students will identify and understand what a tropism is and how plants use them to survive.
Science Lab- The students will be planting some flowers later on this week and completing a science experiment where they will compare different types of plastic.
Social Studies- The students will interpret information in a political cartoon and be able to express points of view in a political cartoon. The students will identify the contributions of notable individuals during the Revolutionary period. The students will analyze the cause and effects of events at the beginning of the American Revolution. The students will identify examples of representative government in the American colonies.
Reading- The students will be reading the play, “Name This American,” by Hannah Reinmuth. The students will be able to identify elements of a Play. The students will take their EOS Test Thursday. Please have the students review their vocabulary words for this play. The students will be making predictions in the book “The Westing Game” our class read aloud book. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.
Language Arts- Word Study- The students in the blue group are sorting their words by suffixes -y, -ly, and -ily. The students in the yellow group are sorting their words by adding the suffix -ity: Vowel Alternation, Schwa to Short- -el and -ity. This test will be on Friday!
In Vocabulary, the students will begin Unit 18 in Vocabulary this week. If you have not accessed the Grammar or Vocabulary websites, please do so by using the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about Capitalizing Proper nouns and Proper Adjectives, Using Abbreviations, andHow to write Titles in special ways. Please encourage your child to utilize the activities on the Sadlier Grammar website.
Physical Education/Health- On Tuesday, April 28, 2015 students will join the Middle School for Physical Education! We are so excited to have them dress out after lunch and join us outside for some fun and games! (Please pack their shoes and P.E. uniform) Students will demonstrate their progress by performing a variety of skills checks. We investigate Recreational games and investigate the rules of those games. We also discuss the “Meaning of Health”. We complete a “Personal Fitness Log”.
Music- Students will demonstrate the cup game rhythms.
Spanish-Students will explore days of the week and months of the year.
Technology- The students will be working on learning how to code and then they will create a story using the Scratch Program. The students will also be receiving their Google school email accounts and learning how to use them.
Art- Students will work on completing their NASA Contest project entries to be mailed this week.
