Hello Everyone!

I hope that you all had an awesome long weekend! It was so good to see everyone yesterday for conferences!

Just a reminder that there is Mass on Wednesday this week. The students will need to wear their dress uniforms tomorrow! Please send in one canned good or boxed item for Trick or Treat for Oasis.

In November, I will be looking for several items for projects that we will be working on for Pow-Wow. I will create a signup sheet for these items on SchoolSpeak. All students in fifth grade will need to send in a plain white t-shirt for Pow-wow that we will tie-dye, cut and bead. Please make sure that the t-shirt is one size larger than needed as they sometimes shrink in the wash. More information about Pow-wow will come out as is gets closer.

Please do not forget that the students are required to read 10 minutes a night and do IXL for 30 minutes for the week and record it on their Logs. It counts as a quiz grade. Please assist me in helping your child become a lifelong reader. These logs are do every Monday for a quiz grade.




Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be learning to describe the symbols and actions of the celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation. The students will be learning to recognize the ways the gifts of the Holy Spirit help us. I will emphasize that Confirmation helps us to be witnesses of Jesus Christ. The students will be choosing the saint that they would like to dress up as for All Saints Day! We will be writing about our saints in class so if they have information about their saint at home, please send it in.

Math- The students will be solving word problems in cooperative groups of three by making a table and/or finding a pattern. Then we will begin preparing for our Chapter 3 Test on Thursday. We will be identifying factors of a number, determining if the numbers are prime or composite. Then we will be using prime factorization (factor trees) to make sure we are finding the prime numbers.

IXL Math-The students can work on Level G sections K.1 through K.7 on IXL. This will help your children to practice number theory. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.

Science-This week, in Nancy Larson Science, the students will be working on describing ionic bonding, covalent bonding and identifying the structural formula of a molecule. Our test will be on Thursday, next week.

Science Lab- There was no Science Lab this week due to no school on Monday.

Social Studies- The students will be identifying improvements in shipping technology and new trade routes in the 1400s. They will analyze how improved technology in shipping made prices on international goods lower. The students will be working on reviewing the information covered in chapter 3 to prepare for our test next week.

Reading-We will be reading and taking the EOS (End of Selection) Test on, “Woodsong”, which is a Personal Narrative story by Gary Paulsen, on Wednesday, October 29th. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the vocabulary presented in the story. The students are doing a great job during D.E.A.R Time. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words based off of syllable juncture in VCV and VVCV patterns. They will sort words by VC/V short, VVCV long, and V/CV long. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on Long -E Patterns in Accented Syllables. They will be listening to the words and determining if the long -e is in the 1st or 2nd syllable and if there is a short -e in the 1st syllable. There are no oddballs when the words are sorted this way. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on Greek Roots GEO-, THERM-, SCOPE-, METER- and -LOGY. Word Study Test on Friday.

This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 8! If you have not accessed the Grammar or Vocabulary websites, please do so by using the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available. There is not a test this week!

In Grammar, the students will be learning about Verbs in the Simple Tense Present and Simple Tense Past.

Physical Education/Health- We investigate “Bullying”. October is Anti-Bullying month. We explore the game of Badminton. We also delve into the skeletal system.

Music- Students will learn Halloween songs and will do a Halloween themed rhythm worksheet.

Spanish- This week we will continue working on the Spanish alphabet. We will work on telling the day’s date. The sign of the cross. Have a wonderful week!!!

Technology- This week we will be practicing using home row when typing our scripts for the Space Mission Newscast and we will continue recording our Newscasts. We will use several different parts of speech in order to create a Halloween Story. We will also be working on IXL.

Art- Students will begin painting the background and foreground of their projects. They will use oil pastel to outline details to serve as a barrier between buildings and landscape.

Hello Everyone!

I hope that you all had an awesome weekend!

Just a reminder that there is no Mass this week. The students may wear their regular uniforms on Wednesday.

Next week, Monday, October 27th, is conference day for grades K-5. The students in these grades do not have school. Please make sure that you have signed up for a conference slot. Report Cards will be distributed at this time.

October is the Month of Mary. If your child has a rosary, please send it to school with them. We will be saying a decade of the rosary each morning. If they do not have a rosary I will provide them with one to use in class. Thanks so much!!

Math- The students will be dividing larder dividends by 2-digit divisors. They will also divide money amounts by 1- and 2-digit divisors. We will be learning to use the order of operations to evaluate numerical expressions. The students will solve word problems by making a table and/or finding a pattern. We will begin preparing for our Chapter 3 Test, next week.

IXL Math-The students can work on Level G sections H.9 through H.15 on IXL. This will help your children to practice their division. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.

Science-This week, in Nancy Larson Science, the students will be working on describing compounds, identifying organic or inorganic compounds and identifying elements in a chemical formula.  They will be able to identify what happens during chemical bonding and they will be able to describe metallic bonding and ionic bonding.

Science Lab- Today we made models of atoms. The students were able to choose their own element and determine how many protons, neutrons and electrons the element contained.

Social Studies- The students will be identifying the major economic and cultural changes that occurred in the thirteenth-century Europe. They will be examining the influence on Europe of Marco Polo's travels to Asia. They will explore how trade spurred the development of cities and towns throughout Europe. The students will identify and interpret information from a variety of different graphs and explore uses for them. They will identify the effects of international trading and banking on Europe, Africa and Asia.

If you have not accessed the Grammar or Vocabulary websites, please do so by using the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available. There is not a test this week!

In Grammar, the students will be learning about Appositives and reviewing for the Unit 2 test on Wednesday! We will begin learning about action verbs and direct objects.

Music- Students will work with their recorders. The students will create rhythms with Halloween themed phrases.

Technology- This week we will be practicing using home row when typing our scripts for the Space Mission Newscast and we will continue recording our Newscasts. We will also be working on IXL and completing a Learning Inventory.

Art- Students will compile practice sketches of city scenes to create a sketch for their watercolor painting.

Hello Everyone!

I hope that you all had an awesome long Weekend and that you enjoyed your Columbus Day!

Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday, October 15th at 10 AM.

Don't forget to sign up for Parent/Teacher Conferences on SchoolSpeak! 


Today, I have published all of the students grades on SchoolSpeak. You will be able to check your child's progress weekly on Thursday from today through the end of the year. If your child has a missing assignment it goes in the grade book as an “M” for missing, this counts as a zero until it has been completed and turned in.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be introduced to the church's liturgical year. They will be able to identify the different colors for the seasons and ways to identify what season it is when in a church. They will also learn that throughout the liturgica
l year we will learn about the whole life of Christ. We will be discussing the season of Ordinary time and what the word ordinary means. The students will learn what it means to venerate or show devotion to Mary. They will also be able to identify the solemnities that we celebrate in the United States. We will begin discussing All Saints Day!

Math- The students will be estimating quotients using compatible numbers. They will be learning how to divide using divisors from 11 through 19. Then we will be working on dividing 3- and 4- digit dividends by 2-digit divisors. Finally, we will be sliding into dividing larder dividends by 2-digit divisors.

IXL Math-The students can work on Level G sections H.7 through H.15 on IXL. This will help your children to practice their division. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade.

Science-This week, in Nancy Larson Science, the students will be able to describe the structure of an atom. Identify valence electrons and use a diagram to represent atoms of elements. They will also be working on describing compounds, identifying organic or inorganic compounds and identifying elements in a chemical formula.

Science Lab- No Science Lab this week due to Columbus Day!

Social Studies- The students will learn about how to be a good citizen by preserving traditions. They will also be able to make connections about how the Native Americans preserved their traditions. We will be reviewing for our Social Studies Test, Friday. I am so excited to see the Time lines. They are due on Thursday, October 16th!!!

Reading-We will be reading and taking the EOS (End of Selection) Test on, “Iditarod Dream”, which is a nonfiction story on Thursday, October 15th. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the vocabulary presented in the story. The students are doing a great job during D.E.A.R Time. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words based off of unusual plurals. They will have two words that fall in the no change category, sheep and deer. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on Long -O Patterns in Accented Syllables. They will be listening to the words and determining if the long -a is in the 1st or 2nd syllable. There is one oddball, Europe. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on Greek and Latin Number Prefixes. Mono-, Uni-, Bi-, and Tri- Test on Friday.

This week in Vocabulary we will not be working on Grammar it will continue next week! If you have not accessed the Grammar or Vocabulary websites, please do so by using the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available. There is not a test this week!

Music- Students will learn more notation and work together in groups to solve music math problems.

Technology- This week we will be practicing using home row when typing our scripts for the Space Mission Newscast and we will begin recording our Newscasts. We will also be completing a Moon Webquest, working on IXL and completing a Learning Inventory.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be able to describe the parts of the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism. They will be able to highlight the importance of water in the Sacrament of Baptism. The students will explore the symbols that are used during the Sacrament of Baptism. Our test this week will be on Friday!

Math- We will be dividing 3- and 4- digit dividends by 1-digit divisors which will result in 3-digit quotients with and without remainders. The students were very proud of their dividing capabilities today!! We will also be using long division to divide larger numbers by 1-digit divisors. Later this week, we will be dividing by 1-digit divisors to obtain quotients with one or more zeros. The students will learn how to divide using short division.

IXL Math-The students can work on Level G sections H.1 through H.6 on IXL. This will help your children to practice their division. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade.

Science-This week, in Nancy Larson Science, we are reviewing for our Solar System Test 2, on October 7th. Then, we will begin our new unit on Matter. We will begin by identifying the elements that make up matter and then identifying and interpreting information on the Periodic Table of Elements. We will classify elements as metalsl, non-metals or metalloids and describe the properties of elements. Finally, we will be describing the structure of an atom.

Science Lab- This week we did a lab called Discrepancies. I did two short demonstrations one had to do with Newton's Law “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.” Then, I asked the class to tell me what happens when sand gets wet and then I used sand that is hydrophobic to see if their predictions were correct. Don't Forget to ask your children what happened? Then we filled a glass of water to the brim and the students had to hypothesize how many paper clips it would take to over flow the cup. Unfortunately, everyone had a false hypothesis!

Social Studies- This week the students will analyze the effects of the Northwest environment on Tlinglet culture. The students will learn to evaluate the technology, art and social ceremonies of the Tlinglet. We will begin reviewing for our Social Studies Test, next Tuesday. Information on a Timeline project will be coming home this week.

Reading-We will be reading and taking the EOS (End of Selection) Test on, “Folktales from Asia” on Wednesday, October 8th. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the vocabulary presented in the story. We will begin reading “Iditarod Dream”, which is a nonfiction story on Thursday! The students are doing a great job during D.E.A.R Time. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words to review plural endings. They will have one oddball, clothes. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on Long -I Patterns in Accented Syllables. They will be listening to the words and determining if the long -a is in the 1st or 2nd syllable. There are three oddballs, machine, forgive, and favorite. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on Multiple Alternations. This sort does not have headers, instead it will be sorted into base word family groups. Test on Friday.

This week in Vocabulary we will be working on reviewing Units 1-6. Please visit the website and use the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available. There is not a test this week!

In Grammar, the students will be learning about Irregular Plural Nouns, Possessive nouns and Appositives.

Physical Education/Health- We continue our Volleyball Unit with playing lead up games and a real game of Volleyball. Let the games begin! We will review the rules and regulations of Volleyball, as well as the history of the game. We continue to work on the skills of setting, serving, forearm bump and rotation in relation to the game of Volleyball.


Music- Students will work with boom-wackers using solfege and note names. They will create harmonies with the instruments.

Spanish- This week we will continue on working on the Spanish vowels and the sign of the cross. We will work on introducing ourselves to someone in Spanish. Have a wonderful week!!!

Technology- This week we will be practicing using home row when typing our scripts for the Space Mission Newscast and we will begin recording our Newscasts. We will also be completing a Moon Webquest.

Art- This week, we’ll begin our unit on architecture! Students will create sketches of city scenes and architecture as practice for their final watercolor painting.
