Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday, September 17th at 9 AM with Fr. Oscar.
This week is Student Advisory Council Campaign Week!! The students in 5th Grade will be participating in electing our 2014-2015 Student Council members.
Mrs. Paul will be reading on the roof on Thursday, September 18th depending on the weather. All PCRS students will gather at front entrance to the school and sit on concrete entrance and sidewalks. Way to go everyone on meeting the Summer Challenge of Reading to new heights!
Progress Reports will be sent out on SchoolSpeak next week!
Please do not forget that the students are required to read and do IXL for 10 minutes a night. Please assist me in helping your child become a lifelong reader.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will be able to identify and describe the Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing and the Sacraments of Service. The students will be reviewing Chapter 3 and they will be evaluated on Thursday. The students will be able to explain that Baptism is the foundation of Christian life.
Math- We will be reviewing Chapter 1 and our test will be on Tuesday! Then we will be jumping into Multiplication! Please review multiplication facts with your children! The students will understand and perform the operation of multiplication, the properties of multiplication and use the pattern for multiplying by 10 and multiples of 10 as a shortcut. The students can work on Level G section F.1 through F.8 on IXL. This will help your children to practice their multiplication.
Science- This week in Nancy Larson Science we are learning to compare and contrast the planets. Then we will learn to identify the characteristics of asteroids, meteoroids, dwarf planets, and comets. They will be able to describe the two motions of Earth, identify the cause of day and night on Earth and identify why the Sun, Moon and stars appear to move across the sky.
Science Lab- This week we explored one of Newton's Laws of Physics using Balloon Rockets. Be sure to ask your child which law it was.
Social Studies- The students will be reviewing for their Chapter 1 Test about the Early cultures. Please take advantage of the textbook website on my webpage for technology, it has a great study guide. Then we will be learning about how the Hopi and Navajo used their environment to enrich their lives.
Reading- We will be reading and taking the EOS (End of Selection) Test on, “Dear Mrs. Parks” on Tuesday, September 16th. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the vocabulary presented in the story.
Language Arts- Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words based on Syllable juncture in the VCV and VCCV patterns. They will have one oddball (busy). The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on Syllable juncture in the VCCCV and VV patterns. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on adding suffix -ity: Vowel Alternation, Schwa to short. Schwa definition-a vowel that has the sound of the first and last vowels of the English word America. Test on Friday.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 4. Please visit the website and use the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available. Test on Friday.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about Complex sentences and using subordinating conjunctions and Correcting Sentence Fragments.
Physical Education/Health- We continue our Physical Fitness testing. We write up and discuss our goals on how to improve our individual fitness goals for future tests. Let the games begin! We will review the rules and regulations of Volleyball, as well as the history of the game. We begin learning how to serve and return a volleyball.
Music- Students will review and identify parts of the recorder, proper playing position, and many music terms. Students will also identify on the staff and demonstrate playing notes B-A-G on the recorder.
Spanish- This week we will work on the Spanish alphabet. Have a wonderful week!!!
Technology- This week we will be discussing Native Americans and completing a webquest. We will also be working on a new Edmodo App!
Art- We continue with our self-portraits this week by using markers to add facial features, and will also add hair and clothing with oil pastels…..they’re looking great!
