Tomorrow is a 12 Noon dismissal for all students.
Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday, October 1st at 9 AM with Fr. Jett. Student Council induction will follow mass.
Picture Day is Thursday, October 2nd! Please make sure your child wears his or her mass uniform for picture day. These photos will be used for the school yearbook.
October is the Month of Mary. If your child has a rosary, please send it to school with them. We will be saying a decade of the rosary each morning. If they do not have a rosary I will provide them with one to use in class. Thanks so much!!
Please do not forget that the students are required to read and do IXL for 10 minutes a night. Please assist me in helping your child become a lifelong reader.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will identify that our Baptism gives us hope of eternal life. We will be reviewing the information covered in Chapter 4. We will be taking our test on Wednesday this week. Later on this week, the students will be able to explain that people of all ages are welcomed to be baptized. They will also be able to describe the parts of the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism.
Math- We will be multiplying money amounts and learning how to solve word problems using more than one step. We will then begin reviewing Multiplication to prepare for our test on Thursday! We will begin Division on Friday!
IXL Math-The students can work on Level G sections F.1 through F.20 on IXL. This will help your children to practice their multiplication. Please remind your child that their IXL time counts as a quiz grade.
Science-This week, in Nancy Larson Science, we are learning about the phases of the moon. We listened to and sang along to the Phases of the Moon Rap song to help the students remember them in order. They will be learning more about solar and lunar eclipses and how they occur. We will begin reviewing and preparing for our Solar System Test 2, on October 7th.
Science Lab- This week we did a lab called Huff, Puff, Slide, where the students were grouped with a buddy or small group to measure the distance that smarties candies could travel in a small container in centimeters across a table. The students were working on identifying the independent and dependent variables. Please ask your students about this lab. I am sure that they would love to share what happened.
Social Studies- The students will be identifying cause and effect. The students will be analyzing the changes that horse brought to the Plains peoples. They will be describing the roles of men and women in the Lakota community. Then they will explain the function of the Lakota winter count. Later this week we will analyze the effects of the Northwest environment on Tlinglet culture. The students will learn to evaluate the technology, art and social ceremonies of the Tlinglet.
Reading-We will be reading and taking the EOS (End of Selection) Test on, “We'll Never Forget You, Roberto Clemente” on Tuesday, September 30th. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the vocabulary presented in the story. We will begin reading “Folk Tales from Asia”, on Wednesday! The students are doing a great job during D.E.A.R Time. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.
Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words to review doubling, e-drop and nothing. The will also learn to sort their words using e-drop, oddball (snowing, going, fixing) and VCC and VVC patterns. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on Long -A Patterns in Accented Syllables. They will be listening to the words and determining if the long -a is in the 1st or 2nd syllable. There are two oddballs, chocolate and again. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on Adding -ion: Vowel Alternation, Spelling change. This sort examines words in which the spelling of the vowel pattern within the base word changes when a suffix is added. Test on Friday.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 6. Please visit the website and use the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available. Test on Friday.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about Nouns. They will learn to identify a noun as common and proper and they will also learn that proper nouns need to be capitalized. They will also learn about singular and plural nouns.
Physical Education/Health- We continue our Volleyball Unit with playing lead up games and a real game of Volleyball. Let the games begin! We will review the rules and regulations of Volleyball, as well as the history of the game. We continue to work on the skills of setting, serving, forearm bump and rotation in relation to the game of Volleyball.
Music- Students will work with boom-wackers using solfege and note names. They will create harmonies with the instruments.
Spanish- This week we will continue on working on saying and writing the numbers from 1-50, do Math problems, and the sign of the cross. We will work on introducing ourselves to someone in Spanish. Have a wonderful week!!!
Technology- This week we will be practicing using home row when typing our scripts for the Space Mission Newscast. We will also be completing a Moon Webquest.
Art- Students who have completed their self-portrait assignments may use this as a free drawing period. Next week, we will begin our unit on architecture!
