Just a reminder that if you have not submitted both the permission slip and fee for the field trip to see A Christmas Carol, please do so ASAP. Also. if you are interested in driving please let me know. I know several of you have mentioned that you would be able to drive. Thanks so much!
Just a reminder that there is Mass on Wednesday this week.
Each student needs to bring in a plain white t-shirt for the Pow-wow. The t-shirt needs to be one size larger than what your child wears, incase it shrinks. We will cut and bead our shirts here at school.
Thanks to everyone who has taken time to sign up for either POW-WOW supplies or snacks! There are still a couple things available to sign up for on the list. You are all awesome!!!
The POW-WOW is next week on Tuesday, November 24th at 10 AM, in the gym. Please try to join us!Remember, we dismiss at 12 Noon on November 25th for Thanksgiving and there is NO SCHOOL on November 26th and 27th.
Please do not forget that the students are required to read 10 minutes a night for a total of 50 minutes for the week. The students also need to complete 30 minutes of IXL for the week. Please assist me in helping your child become a lifelong reader. These logs are do every Monday for a grade.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- They will learn about the importance of preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The students will be taking their Chapter 8 Test on Wednesday! The students will be learning to describe the symbols and actions of the celebration of the sacrament of Confirmation. The students will be learning to recognize the ways the gifts of the Holy Spirit help us. I will emphasize that Confirmation helps us to be witnesses of Jesus Christ.
Math- The students will be developing the necessary skills to successfully add fractions with like and unlike denominators. The students will demonstrate how to add 3 or more fractions with like and unlike denominators. The students will be developing the necessary skills to add mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators, add and subtract mixed numbers, remaining sums and differences, rename the differences of two fractions with like denominators, subtract fractions with compatible unlike denominators and calculate the sums or differences for each type of problem.
IXL Math-The students can work on Level G sections L.2 through L.6 on IXL. This will help your children to practice number theory. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.
Science-This week the students will be evaluated on the concepts presented in Chemistry- examining the structure of matter. The students will classify matter as a pure substance or a mixture. They will identify mixtures as homogeneous or heterogeneous. The students will classify mixtures as solutions, colloids, or suspensions. The students will identify characteristics of solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas.
Science Lab- This week we will be making Oobleck also known as slime!!
Social Studies- The students will be able to explain the reasons for Cortes's interest in the Aztec empire. The students will also describe the events that led to the fall of the Aztec Empire. They will summarize the results of Pizarro's conquest of the Inca Empire. We will also begin Pow-wow preparations by creating a Native American Tale which we will create into a Buffalo Skin story. The students will create a headdress, a special bead for a necklace.
Reading- We will be reading and taking the EOS (End of Selection) Test on, “Island of the Blue Dolphins”, which is a Historical Fiction story by Scott O'Dell, on Tuesday, November 17th. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the vocabulary presented in the story. We will begin working on our Reader's Theater presentation of “The Hidden One.” We will begin reading the nonfiction story, “Everglades” by Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time.
Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words based off of Syllable Juncture in VCV and VVCV Patterns. The students will be identifying whether they are hearing a Long or Short pattern in the accented syllables. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on the SCHWA + R Spelled ER, IR, and UR in the first syllables. There are two oddballs-spirit and every. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on Suffixes -AL, -IAL, and -IC. These suffixes often signal adjectives that were derived from nouns or verbs. All three suggest “associated with” or “relating to”. Word Study Test on Friday.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 5! They will have a test on Unit 5 on Friday.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about linking verbs, verb phrases: progressive forms of verbs and perfect tenses.
Physical Education/Health- Students will be participating cooperative relays and games. Students will work on concepts of speed, levels, direction and teamwork.well as learning to identify different types of exercise and it's relationship to keeping their bodies healthy. Cooperative play will be reinforced as opposed to competition. We continue our exploration of Volleyball.
Music- Students will identify the notes on barred instruments for the song “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”
Spanish- Students will learn “El Padre Nuestro” They will tell the months of the year and apply them on the day’s date.
Technology- This week we will work on racing our boats and typing a Diamante Poem. Then we will also be typing and editing our Native American Tales and printing them so that we can display them in the hall. We will also be working on IXL.
Art- Today in Art class, students who have completed their self project project can work on adding details to their Monet-style drawings.
