I hope that you all had an awesome Weekend!!
Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday, October 14th.
Don't forget to turn in your items for the PTO Fundraiser, today.
World Food Day, October 16th is quickly approaching and PCRS is collecting donations for the Cross Catholic Outreach in order to Change the World and follow Matthew 25:35.
Student-led Parent Teacher Conference Sign-up is available on SchoolSpeak. The students in fifth grade will need to be present at the conference.
October is the Month of Mary. If your child has a rosary, please send it to school with them. We will be saying a decade of the rosary each morning. If they do not have a rosary I will provide them with one to use in class. Thanks so much!!
Please do not forget that the students are required to read for 50 minutes a week and do IXL for 30 minutes a week. Please assist me in helping your child become a lifelong reader. They need to turn in their Reading Logs every Monday morning as it counts for a grade.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will explore the symbols that are used during the Sacrament of Baptism and review the chapter 4 concepts to prepare for our test will be on Thursday! All Saints Day projects will be discussed and posted on SchoolSpeak.
Math- The students will be investigating how to divide 3- and 4- digit dividends by 1-digit divisors which will result in 3-digit quotients with and without remainders. We will also be using long division to divide larger numbers by 1-digit divisors. Later this week, we will be dividing by 1-digit divisors to obtain quotients with one or more zeros. The students will learn how to divide using short division. The students can work on Level G section C.1 through C.13 on IXL. This will help your children to practice their multiplication.
Science-The students will be identifying how solar and lunar eclipses occur. We will be reviewing and preparing for our test next week on the Solar System.
Science Lab- Today, we completed a lab where we were focused on the Scientific Method, mainly making observations and inferences in order to develop our Hypothesis. We watched a video where the students had to hypothesize about the accuracy of NFL pro Drew Brees and an Olympic Archer.
Social Studies- This week the students will analyze the effects of the Northwest environment on Tlinglet culture. The students will learn to evaluate the technology, art and social ceremonies of the Tlinglet. The students will learn about how to be a good citizen by preserving traditions. They will also be able to make connections about how the Native Americans preserved their traditions. We will be reviewing for our Social Studies Chapter 2 Test, on Thursday, October 15th..
Reading-We will be reading and taking the EOS (End of Selection) Test on, “We’ll Never Forget You Roberto Clemente” on Friday, October 16th. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the vocabulary presented in the story. The students are doing a great job during D.E.A.R Time. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.
Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words based off of unusual plurals. They will have two words that fall in the no change category, sheep and deer. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on the Ambiguous vowels in Accented Syllables (AU, AW and AL). They will have two oddballs laughed and all right. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on Noun Suffixes (-er, -or, -ist, and -ian). Remember to capitalize Asian and Australian. Test on Friday.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on reviewing the words, definitions, synonyms, and antonyms Units 1-3. The students will be reviewing their words by completing the sentence, writing using their vocabulary words and using their vocabulary words in context. Test next week. The students will use their school business email accounts to login and use the activities to help them to master the skills in both the Vocabulary and Grammar websites.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about how to identify and the proper usage of Possessive nouns and Appositives. Unit 2 Test next week.
Physical Education/Health- We continue our Physical Fitness testing. We write up and discuss our goals on how to improve our individual fitness goals for future tests. Let the games begin! We will review the rules and regulations of Hockey, as well as the history of the game. We work on passing, scoring and teamwork.
Music- Students will identify and perform level 2 ingredients of rhythm words.
Spanish- Students will learn “El Padre Nuestro”, and will continue to identify differences when greeting adults and peers. They will understand the Spanish alphabet and its phonetic sounds. They will work on numbers from 1- 100.
Technology- This week the students will be creating a boat that they will race against another student. The students will need to design their boat from the supplies that are provided. The students will need to edit their I Am Poems.
Art- This week in Fifth Grade Art, We’ll begin a new project making clay Christmas ornaments to support a mission for the homeless.
