Hello Everyone!
I hope that you all had an awesome Weekend!!
Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday, October 7th.
Don't forget to turn in your items for the PTO Fundraiser.
Next week October 12th, there will be no school due to Columbus Day!
Thank you for supporting the Missions in Africa last Friday.
World Food Day, October 17th is quickly approaching and PCRS will be collecting donations for the Cross Catholic Outreach in order to Change the World and follow Matthew 25:35.
October is the Month of Mary. If your child has a rosary, please send it to school with them. We will be saying a decade of the rosary each morning. If they do not have a rosary I will provide them with one to use in class. Thanks so much!!
Please do not forget that the students are required to read for 50 minutes a week and do IXL for 30 minutes a week. Please assist me in helping your child become a lifelong reader. They need to turn in their Reading Logs every Monday morning as it counts for a grade.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will be able to explain that Baptism is the foundation of Christian life. The students will be able to describe the parts of the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism. They will be able to highlight the importance of water in the Sacrament of Baptism. The students will explore the symbols that are used during the Sacrament of Baptism. Our test will be on Tuesday next week!
Math- The students will be reviewing the skills presented in Chapter 2 to prepare for their test on Wednesday. The students will be using multiplication facts to find related division facts in order to understand the rules of division. The students will use division facts and patterns with zero to divide by multiples of 10, 100 and 1000. The students will be investigating how to divide 3- and 4- digit dividends by 1-digit divisors which will result in 3-digit quotients with and without remainders. We will also be using long division to divide larger numbers by 1-digit divisors. Later this week, we will be dividing by 1-digit divisors to obtain quotients with one or more zeros. The students will learn how to divide using short division. The students can work on Level G section C.1 through C.13 on IXL. This will help your children to practice their multiplication.
Science-The students will be comparing the number of hours of daylight at different times of the year. They will also be constructing a graph to show changing hours of daylight. The students will identify the phases of the Earth's Moon. The students will be identifying how solar and lunar eclipses occur.
Science Lab- This week we did a lab called Discrepancies. I did two short demonstrations one had to do with Newton's Law “Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.” Then, I asked the class to tell me what happens when sand gets wet and then I used sand that is hydrophobic to see if their predictions were correct. Don't Forget to ask your children what happened? Then we filled a glass of water to the brim and the students had to hypothesize how many paper clips it would take to over flow the cup. Unfortunately, everyone had a false hypothesis!
Social Studies- This week the students will analyze the effects of the Northwest environment on Tlinglet culture. The students will learn to evaluate the technology, art and social ceremonies of the Tlinglet. We will begin reviewing for the Chapter 2 test on Thursday.
Reading-We will be reading and taking the EOS (End of Selection) Test on, “Elena” on Tuesday, October 8th. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the vocabulary presented in the story. We will begin reading “We'll Never Forget You Roberto Clemente”, which is a Biography story on Wednesday! The students are doing a great job during D.E.A.R Time. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.
Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words based on plural endings Adding -ES. They will have one oddball, clothes. The students will sort the words in the add -es category by base words that end in -ch, -sh, -x, and -s. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on Ambiguous vowels in the accented syllables (OY/OI and OU/OW). They will be listening to the words and determining what pattern (-oy, -oi, -ow, -ou, and -ou (short a sound).they follow for sorting after they have been sorted by their accented syllables. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on Comparative Suffixes (-er, -est, -ier, and -iest). They will also sort these words based on the e-drop, change y to I and nothing. Test on Friday.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit3. The students will be reviewing their words by completing the sentence, writing using their vocabulary words and using their vocabulary words in context. Test on Friday. The students will use their school business email accounts to login and use the activities to help them to master the skills in both the Vocabulary and Grammar websites.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about how to identify and the proper usage of Singular and Plural Nouns, Irregular Plural Nouns, Possessive nouns and Appositives.
