Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday, September 16th at 10 AM with Fr. Brian. This week is the fifth grade mass, please join us, if you have an opportunity.
Student Advisory council (SAC) campaigning information went home today.
Please remind your child to complete his or her reading log. The students should be filling out this information before they come to school as it is a fifth grade responsibility.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will be reviewing how we celebrate Christ's Paschal Mystery in the liturgy. The students will be introduced to the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy students will be reviewing how Jesus shares His mission with the Church and then they will be evaluated on Chapter 2 on Tuesday. Then the remainder of the week we will be exploring the Seven Sacraments and how the Church celebrates them. The students will learn that the Seven Sacraments are special signs of God's love. The students will be able to identify and describe the Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing and the Sacraments of Service.
Math- The students will learn how to solve word problems using the Guess and test strategy and we will review for our test that will be on Friday, September 18th. I will be mentioning IXL in class and I will be encouraging the class to use their IXL accounts to reinforce the learning that is taking place in the classroom. To make logging in easier, I changed their IXL passwords to just their library numbers.
Science- The students will be able to describe the life cycle of a star. We will also be reviewing for our first test on Wednesday, September 16th. The students will be identifying characteristics of our solar system and our sun. The students will be able to describe the planets in our solar system.
Science Lab- This week we will explore one of Newton's Laws of Physics using Balloon Rockets. Be sure to ask your child which law it was.
Social Studies- We will also be exploring how the Aztec and the Inca built their powerful empires. The students will analyze how the Inca benefited by modifying their environment. The students will compare and contract the Inca and Aztec cultures. The students will review the skills and concepts presented in the chapter to prepare for their test on Thursday, September 17th.
Reading- The students will be evaluated on Thursday, realistic Fiction story called, “Yang the Third and her impossible Family”. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the Vocabulary presented in the story.
Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words by adding -ing to words with VCe and VVC patterns. VVC words you just add -ing, e-drop is where the word drops the e and then adds -ing, nothing category means that you only add -ing. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based onLong -O Patterns in the accented syllables. The students will sort based on the syllable that the Long O- is in and there is one oddball, Europe. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on the prefixes re-, ex-, in-, de-. Test on Friday.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 2. The students will review word meaning and usage in the unit's reading passage. The students will demonstrate and understanding of the unit's words by completing the choosing the right word, synonyms and antonyms, writing words in action, and completing the sentence.
In Grammar, the students will be learning how to locate compound predicates in a sentence using conjunctions. The students will identify whether a sentence is simple or compound.
Physical Education/Health- We summarize our Basketball Unit and continue with lead up activities and game play. We research "President's Physical Fitness" Testing. We demonstrate our understanding on how to practice and perform each test activity. We begin testing and record our scores. Tests for this week will include: Jump Rope, Sit Ups and Pull Ups.
Music- Students will practice and prepare for their performance for Fun and Food Fest at St. Therese Church September 18 and 19. Please see SchoolSpeak announcement for more details.
Spanish- Students will learn “El Padre Nuestro”, and will continue to identify differences when greeting adults and peers. They will understand the Spanish alphabet and its phonetic sounds.
Technology- Nancy Larson Science Activity where they identify galaxies from the catalog.
Art- Today in Art Class, students will add hair, with a focus on texture and shading, and will strive to achieve a likeness and to create realistic features in their self-portraits.
