Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday at 10 AM, with Father Brian.
Picture Day is October 1st! Please have your students wear their Mass uniform for this day!
Time lines are due on October 1st.
Reading Logs are due on October 5th. The students will receive a new Reading Log in their Thursday Folder and it will begin on October 5th.
October is the Month of Mary. If your child has a rosary, please send it to school with them. We will be saying a decade of the rosary each morning. If they do not have a rosary I will provide them with one to use in class. Thanks so much!!
Please do not forget that the students are required to read for 50 minutes a week and do IXL for 30 minutes a week. Please assist me in helping your child become a lifelong reader. They need to turn in their Reading Logs every Monday morning as it counts for a grade.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion-The students will be discussing the Seven Sacraments and how they are special signs of God's love. The students will be able to identify and describe the Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing and the Sacraments of Service. The students will be reviewing Chapter 3 and they will be evaluated on Thursday. The students will be able to explain that Baptism is the foundation of Christian life.
Math- Please review multiplication facts with your children! The students will demonstrate and understand how to multiply a whole number by a 2-digit multiplier. The students will investigate how to multiply a whole number by a 3-digit multiplier. The students will show that they can multiply with zeros in the multiplier. The students will infer how to multiply money amounts using the skills that they have developed in multiplication. The students will compare the information in a word problem to identify the hidden information and solve the word problems using more than one step. The students can work on Level G section C.1 through C.13 on IXL. This will help your children to practice their multiplication.
Science-This week in Nancy Larson Science the students will be able to describe the two motions of Earth, identify the cause of day and night on Earth and identify why the Sun, Moon and stars appear to move across the sky. The students will identify the causes of the Earth's seasons. The students will be comparing the number of hours of daylight at different times of the year. They will also be constructing a graph to show changing hours of daylight. The students will identify the phases of the Earth's Moon. The students will be identifying how solar and lunar eclipses occur.
Science Lab-This week we did an observation lab about what a can of soda would feel like on each planet, the moon and the dwarf planet, Pluto. Ask your child on which planet would the soda weigh the most? the least?
Social Studies-The students will be determining the influences of the environment and natural resources on Native Americans who lived in the Eastern Woodlands. They will be identifying the main features of the Hodenosaunee culture. They will also be able to describe the goals and organization of the Iroquois Confederacy.
Reading-We will be reading and taking the EOS (End of Selection) Test on the genre: letters called, “Dear Mrs. Parks” on Tuesday, September 29th. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the Vocabulary presented in the story. The students will begin reading a Historical Fiction story called “Elena”. They will compare the style of writing to the other genres that the students have been exposed to so far.
Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words based on adding -ed to words double, e-drop, nothing and oddball. The students also learned to sort the words based off of the sound that the -ed ending made (/d/, /t/, /id/). The oddball words are chewed and mixed. The pink group will be sorting by the Long E Patterns in accented syllables. 1St Long, 1st Short, and 2nd Long syllables. The students will also learn to sort their words by pattern and sound. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on suffixes -y, -ly, and -ily. Test on Friday.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 3. The students will use their school business email accounts to login and use the activities to help them to master the skills in both the Vocabulary and Grammar websites.
In Grammar, the students will be Correcting Sentence Fragments and reviewing for our Unit 1 Test Part 1 (Lessons 1-5), Wednesday, September 30th. Unit 1 Part 2 Test(Lessons 6-9)- October 1st.
Physical Education/Health-We begin our Volleyball Unit with playing lead up games and a real game of Volleyball. Let the games begin! We will review the rules and regulations of Volleyball, as well as the history of the game. We continue to work on the skills of setting, serving, forearm bump and rotation in relation to the game of Volleyball.
Music-Students will demonstrate their jelly and jam rhythms while using rhythm instruments.
Spanish- Students will learn “El Padre Nuestro”, and will continue to identify differences when greeting adults and peers. They will understand the Spanish alphabet and its phonetic sounds. They will work on numbers from 1- 100.
Technology-This week the students will discuss email etiquette. The students will be accessing quizlet and kahoot in order to review information covered in grammar class.
Art-Today in Fifth Grade Art, we’ll paint the backgrounds of our portrait projects, and further enhance the details in our eyes!
