I hope that you all had a fun-filled Labor Day Weekend!! Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday, September 9th at 10:00 AM with Fr. Brian. Please join us, if you have an opportunity. Next Wednesday's Mass will be the Fifth grades class mass, where your children will be the greeters, readers, and gift bearers.
Tomorrow evening is our Read-A-Bration and Technology Night.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will be able to explain the meaning of the Kingdom of God. The students will be able to identify how we can serve the Kingdom of God. The students will review the chapter skills and concepts that are key to growing as disciples of Jesus Christ. The students will be evaluated on Thursday, September 12th. The students will be exploring ways to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. They will be learning that we celebrate Christ's Paschal Mystery in the liturgy. The students will be introduced to the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy.
Math- The students will investigate how to add three or more addends, with regrouping. The students will demonstrate how to subtract whole numbers and money amounts with zeros in the minuend. They will also demonstrate their knowledge of how to add or subtract numbers through hundred thousands and money amounts up to five digits. The students will use a list of Roman Numerals in order to read and write them through the thousands. I will be mentioning IXL in class and I will be encouraging the class to use their IXL accounts to reinforce the learning that is taking place in the classroom. To make logging in easier, I changed their IXL passwords to just their library numbers.
Science-This week in Nancy Larson Science we will be investigating galaxies and the life-cycle of stars. The students will be able to describe the life cycle of a star. We will also be reviewing for our first test on Tuesday, September 15th.
Science Lab- On Friday, the students will complete a science investigation entitled Huff, Puff Slide. The students will be given a container with smarties candies inside and they will have to measure how far the container will slide when they blow upon it depending on how many smarties are inside.
Social Studies-We will be exploring how the Aztec and the Inca built their powerful empires. The students will describe ways in which the Aztec adapted to and modified their environment to meet their needs. The students will identify features of the Aztec and inca empires. The students will analyze how the Inca benefited by modifying their environment. The students will compare and contract the Inca and Aztec cultures. The students will review the skills and concepts presented in the chapter to prepare for their test on Wednesday, September 16th.
Reading-The students will be evaluated on EOS (End of Selection) Test on “Sees Behind Trees”, on Thursday. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the Vocabulary presented in the story.
We will begin reading, “Yang the Third and her impossible Family”, which falls in the genre of Realistic Fiction.
Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words by adding -ING to words with VC and VCC Patterns. They will have words that double and add -ING and words that you do nothing to just add -ING. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on Long -I patterns in the accented syllables more specifically 1st, 2nd, and oddball patterns. They will have three words that are oddballs, which are machine, forgive, and favorite. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on prefixes (Pre-, Fore-, Post-, and After-). Test on Friday.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 2. The students will review word meaning and usage in the unit's reading passage. The students will demonstrate and understanding of the unit's words by completing the choosing the right word, synonyms and antonyms, writing words in action, and completing the sentence.
In Grammar, the students will be learning how to locate Subjects in Imperative Sentences and declarative sentences. They will also identify Compound Subjects using conjunctions.
Physical Education/Health- We summarize our Basketball Unit and continue with lead up activities and game play. We research "President's Physical Fitness" Testing. We demonstrate our understanding on how to practice and perform each test activity. We begin testing and record our scores. Tests for this week will include: Jump Rope, Sit Ups and Sit and Reach.
Music- Students will show and demonstrate movements and lyrics to various songs for Fun and Food Fest on September 18 and 19 at St. Therese Church.
Spanish- Students will learn “El Padre Nuestro”, and will continue to identify differences when greeting adults and peers. They will understand the Spanish alphabet.
Technology- Scantron Testing in Technology Lab this week.
Art- Students are focusing on facial composition. Primary focus will will be achieving a likeness and creating realistic features.
