Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!!

Mass is on Wednesday, May 25th and fifth grade is in charge of it. Please join us if you are available. Please have your child wear his or her dress uniform.

This Friday, May 29th is FUN DAY!!!! I will be looking for volunteers to man the fifth grade booth. Please check SchoolSpeak and sign-up for a time slot. Thanks in advance!

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will seek ways to grow in unity and holiness and understand that the Church is one and holy. The students will understand what it means to be catholic and apostolic in the Catholic Church. The students will identify that we need to appreciate and respect all people no matter what faith they belong to. The students will choose one way that we can work for peace and justice and explain why it is important. The students will prepare for their Chapter 26 Test on Friday. The students will identify what it means to Honor Mary and complete a Unit 4 Test on Monday.

Math-The students will be able to review the standard metric units meter (m), liter (l), and gram (g) and the measuring tools associated with each. They will also rename the metric units. The students will relate and choose appropriate units of length to measure to the nearest millimeter, centimeter, and decimeter. The students will be able to relate and choose the appropriate metric units of capacity and rename and compare them. The students will be able to relate and choose the appropriate units of mass and rename and compare them. The students will be able to find the area of a plane figure by counting square units and using a grid to estimate the area of a plane figure as well. The students will be able to use formulas to find the areas of rectangles and squares, parallelograms using its related rectangle and the area of a triangle. They will be able to identify solid figures.

They can work for mastery on Level G sections W.7 – W.18 and B.18-B.25 on IXL. This will help your child to practice geometry. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.

Science- This week the students will compare the adaptive characteristics of species that improve their ability to survive or reproduce in an ecosystem. They will review the chapter concepts and prepare for their Unit A Chapter 4 Test Wednesday. The students will begin learning about the layers of the earth and they will be able to identify each as well as what they are made of.

Science Lab-The students will be completing a science lab where they will be testing different types of light and comparing them on the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Social Studies- The students will analyze the causes and effects of the Battle of Yorktown. The students will summarize the results of the Treaty of Paris. The students will discuss the effect of the Patriot victory on the Loyalists and the Native American groups. The students will identify the sequence of events that led to the end of the American Revolution. The students will interpret historical maps by reading map scales and key symbols as well as analyzing information by comparing and contrasting a large-scale and small scale msp of the same region. The students will analyze the effect of the articles of Confederation on relations between states. They will identify why

Reading-The students will be reading the Expository Nonfiction story, “Black Frontiers,” by Lillian Schlissel. The students will be able to identify the elements of an Expository Nonfiction story. The students will take their EOS Test Friday. Please have the students review their vocabulary words for this story. The students will be making predictions in the book “The Westing Game” our class read aloud book. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

Language Arts-In Grammar, the students will be learning about Quotations, Words that are often misspelled and words often confused. Grammar Unit 6 Test will be on Thursday, May 28th. Please encourage your child to utilize the activities on the Sadlier Grammar website.

Physical Education/Health- Students will be participating cooperative relays and games. Students will work on concepts of speed, levels, direction and teamwork.well as learning to identify different types of exercise and it's relationship to keeping their bodies healthy. Cooperative play will be reinforced as opposed to competition. We continue our exploration of recreational games.

Music- Students will identify and demonstrate playing rhythmic notation and music terminology.

Spanish-Students will continue to explore the Hispanic culture through dance and songs.

Technology- The students will be working on building rockets that they will test using NASA software and then launch.

Art- No Art Class this week due to Memorial Day.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be able to describe the ways that bishops, priests and deacons serve the church. The students will be able to identify the main parts of the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The students will be reviewing the information covered in Chapter 24 for their test tomorrow. The students will seek ways to grow in unity and holiness and understand that the Church is one and holy.

Math- The students will be able to name the time zone of a given city using a time zone map. The students will also be able to find the time, given the time zone or city. The students will be able to add or subtract customary units of measure and units of time. The students will be able to solve multistep word problems and use various strategies to solve word problems involving measurement. The students will check their progress with the objectives presented in Lessons 1-9.

They can work for mastery on Level G sections W.1 – W.6 and X.1-X.7 on IXL. This will help your child to practice geometry. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.

Science- This week the students will describe some structures that make up the reproductive systems if flowering plants. The students will describe structures that are found in a simple system such as a sprouting seed. They will be able to describe life cycles of plants. They will compare the adaptive characteristics of species that improve their ability to survive or reproduce in an ecosystem.

Science Lab- The students will be completing a science lab where they will be testing different types of light and comparing them on the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Social Studies- The students will analyze the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Philadelphia, Saratoga, and Fort Vincennes. The students will examine the hardships suffered at Valley Forge. The students will identify the effects on the Patriots of victories, defeats, patriotic songs and traitors. The students will identify cause and effect of the Revolutionary War battles.

Reading- The students will be reading the Nonfiction story, “Lewis and Clark,” by R. Conrad Stein. The students will be able to identify elements of a Nonfiction story. The students will take their EOS Test Wednesday. Please have the students review their vocabulary words for this story. The students will be making predictions in the book “The Westing Game” our class read aloud book. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

Language Arts- Word Study- The students in the blue group are sorting their words by adjective suffixes -ful, -ous, and -ious. The students in the yellow group are sorting their words by Vowel Alternation, Long to Short, Long to Schwa, Short to Schwa. This test will be on Friday!

In Vocabulary, the students will complete their test final mastery test on Wednesday. If you have not accessed the Grammar or Vocabulary websites, please do so by using the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available.

Religion- The students will be reviewing the information covered in Chapter 24 for their test tomorrow. The students will be able to appreciate the ministry of Jesus and hHis apostles by learning about the sacrament of Holy Orders. The students will be able to explain the importance of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. The students will be able to describe the ways that bishops, priests and deacons serve the church.

Math- The eighth grade students in geometry have come in and taught three lessons in geometry to the fifth grade as part of their geometry project. The fifth grade students enjoyed having the eighth grade in as their teachers. The students will explore translations, reflections and rotations of figures. The students will explore tessellations and determine which polygons tesselate. The students will be working on solving word problems using a diagram or a model. Our Chapter 10 Math Test will be on Friday, May 8th!

They can work for mastery on Level G sections B.1 - B.33 on IXL. This will help your child to practice geometry. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.

Science- This week the students will identify and understand what a tropism is and how plants use them to survive. The students will compare plant responses to light and gravity. The students will predict how plants will respond in order to get the light they need to survive in their ecosystem. The students will compare the adaptive characteristics of plants that result in their ability to reproduce. The students will identify traits in plants that are passed on from parents to offspring. The students will describe some structures that make up the reproductive systems if flowering plants.

Science Lab- The students will be completing a science experiment where they will compare different types of plastic.

Social Studies- The students will identify the contributions of notable individuals during the Revolutionary period. The students will analyze the cause and effects of events at the beginning of the American Revolution. The students will summarize the main points in the Declaration of independence. Chapter 9 Test Thursday!

Reading- The students will be reading the Biography, “What's the Big Idea, Ben Franklin?,” by Jean Fritz. The students will be able to identify elements of a Biography. The students will take their EOS Test Thursday. Please have the students review their vocabulary words for this story. The students will be making predictions in the book “The Westing Game” our class read aloud book. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

Physical Education/Health- Students will demonstrate their progress by performing a variety of skills checks. We investigate Recreational games and investigate the rules of those games. We also discuss the “Meaning of Health”. We complete a “Personal Fitness Log”.

Music- Students will demonstrate sign language to the song "Our God" and review the rhythms for cups to the song.     

Spanish-Students will continue to explore days of the week and months of the year.

Technology- The students will be working on learning how to code and then they will create a story using the Scratch Program. The students will also be receiving their Google school email accounts and learning how to use them.

Art- Having completed our NASA Contest, we’ll begin a new recycled paper weaving project, learning about the importance of reuse and recycling. Our students will create weavings with found objects and leftover art materials.

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!!

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for all of the kind words, thoughts and prayers for my Grandma and my family this week. I really appreciate them and it means a lot to me that you all were thinking and praying for us. Thank you.

Math- The students will develop an understanding of a circle and all of the elements of a circle (i.e. chord, diameter, radius, center, arc.) The students will use pi to determine the Circumference of a circle. The students will identify and draw lines of symmetry. The students will explore translations, reflections and rotations of figures. The students will explore tessellations and determine which polygons tesselate.

Science- This week the students will be evaluated on Unit A chapter 3. then the students will be able to describe the structures and processes involved in the food making process of plants. The students will recognize that photosynthesis is an adaptive characteristic of plants that improves their ability to survive in an ecosystem. The students will conclude that plants use carbon dioxide and energy from sunlight to build molecules of sugar for growth and maintenance, and that plants release oxygen in the air. The students will identify and understand what a tropism is and how plants use them to survive.

Science Lab- The students will be planting some flowers later on this week and completing a science experiment where they will compare different types of plastic.

Social Studies- The students will interpret information in a political cartoon and be able to express points of view in a political cartoon. The students will identify the contributions of notable individuals during the Revolutionary period. The students will analyze the cause and effects of events at the beginning of the American Revolution. The students will identify examples of representative government in the American colonies.

Reading- The students will be reading the play, “Name This American,” by Hannah Reinmuth. The students will be able to identify elements of a Play. The students will take their EOS Test Thursday. Please have the students review their vocabulary words for this play. The students will be making predictions in the book “The Westing Game” our class read aloud book. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

We are so excited to have them dress out after lunch and join us outside for some fun and games! We investigate Recreational games and investigate the rules of those games. We also discuss the “Meaning of Health”. We complete a “Personal Fitness Log”.

Music- Students will demonstrate the cup game rhythms.

Spanish-Students will explore days of the week and months of the year.

Technology- The students will be working on learning how to code and then they will create a story using the Scratch Program. The students will also be receiving their Google school email accounts and learning how to use them.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be able to understand what it means and explain that we are called to live as Jesus' disciples. The students will explore some ways to serve God and the Church. They will gain an understanding of who the laypeople of the church are and what they do. The students will be able to describe the religious life as a service to God and neighbor. The students will develop and be grateful for good friendships and how they help us to live as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Math- The students will solve word problems by writing number sentences. The students will use various strategies to solve word problems involving decimals. The students will review the skills and topics presented in Chapter 9 to prepare for the Chapter 9 Test on Thursday. The students will demonstrate their ability to name angles and identify their parts and their ability to use a protractor to measure and draw angles.

They can work for mastery on Level G sections G.1 - G.10 on IXL. This will help your child to practice multiplying decimals. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.

Science- This week the students will be comparing characteristics of plants that improve their ability to survive in a specific environment. To describe how food is transported in plants and describe the function of plant leaves. The students will compare the adaptive characteristics of species that improve their ability to survive and reproduce in an ecosystem. The students will also compare life cycles of plants and animals.

Science Lab- The students worked on an engineering research activity today. They used a plastic easter egg filled with washers to the weight of 64 g just like an actual extra large egg would weigh. Then the students used rubber bands to create a bungee cord. Then the students would test their bungee cord and measure the distance that it dropped with different amounts of rubber bands attached. They completed three trials for each and recorded their average. We discussed Newton's Laws of Motion and what forces were acting on our egg. The students will create a line graph to show their data.

Social Studies- The students will analyze information by making generalizations about people, places, and things. The students will evaluate the conflict over land that led France and England to fight a war. The students will analyze events that led to the end of the French and Indian War. The students will analyze main ideas and supporting details. The students will understand the importance of leadership at all levels in a democratic society. The students will explain the advantages of using mediation to resolve conflicts.

Reading- The students will be reading the story, “The Fun They Had,” Science Fiction, by Isaac Asimov. The students will be able to identify elements of a Science Fiction. The students will take their EOS Test Thursday. Please have the students review their vocabulary words for this story. The students will be making predictions in the book “The Westing Game” our class read aloud book. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

Language Arts- Word Study- The students in the blue group are sorting their words by suffixes -ty, -ity, and the basewords for each. The students in the yellow group are sorting their words by Noun Suffixes -er, -or, -ian, -ist. This test will be on Friday!

In Vocabulary, the students will not have a new unit in Vocabulary this week. If you have not accessed the Grammar or Vocabulary websites, please do so by using the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available.

In Grammar, the students will be learning about Contractions with Pronouns and Reviewing Unit 5 for the Test next Tuesday. They will learn about and determine when and how to apply subject pronouns as well as about pronoun's antecedent and object pronouns. Please encourage your child to utilize the activities on the Sadlier Grammar website.

Physical Education/Health- Games which involve cooperation, problem solving and teamwork will challenge our learner s this week. We will also work on endurance and conditioning activities. We will participate in the game of soccer.

Music- Students will experiment with and categorize band instruments.

Spanish- Students will create a family tree.

Technology- The students will be working on learning how to code and then they will create a story using the Scratch Program.

Art- Today our Fifth Graders will begin brainstorming ideas for this year’s NASA Contest while viewing some sample images. We’ll also begin painting the backgrounds of our individual design!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day Tomorrow!!

Mass is on Wednesday, March 18th at 10 AM, with Fr. Brian. Please join us if you are available. Please have your child wear his or her dress uniform.

Friday, we will be having the Stations of the Cross at 2:15pm.

The Children's Auction will be on Friday, March 20th. Tickets are $0.25 each. The students will be able to bid on items by placing a ticket in a cup.

March 24th is a half day of school.

The end of the quarter has been moved until March 25th and Report Cards will be sent out on April 1st.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will identify the special feast days in the church that are related to Mary. The students will practice saying the rosary as a class and discuss the Joyful Mysteries, Sorrowful Mysteries, Glorious Mysteries, and The Mysteries of Light. The students will review the chapter ideas that are key to growing as a disciple of Jesus Christ and prepare for their Chapter 19 Test. The students will learn about the season of Lent, the Triduum, and how we prepare for Easter. We will celebrate the Stations of the Cross together on Friday.

Math- The students will identify word problems that involve more than on step. The students will review Chapter 8 skills to prepare for their test on thursday. The students will multiply decimals by 10, 100, and 1000 and by multiples of 10 and 100.

IXL Math-The students can work for mastery on Level G sections C.1 - C.12 and E.1 - E.8 on IXL. This will help your child to practice data and statistics in graphs or through probability. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.

Science- This week the students will be measuring the volume of liquids and solids. The students will be measuring the volume of a rectangular solid. The students will be describing density. The students will also be comparing the density of different metals. The students will be comparing the density of solids and liquids.

Science Lab- The students have been practicing measuring the Volume and Mass of various items. Today the students used this information to determine the Density of those items. The students will be conducting a lab where they will be determining the Density of various wooden cubes.

Social Studies- They will also analyze information by summarizing the important elements in a history passage. The students will be able to explain and analyze why American colonists began to develop their own governments and the structures of colonial government. The students will review the summarizing skill and information from Chapter 7 to prepare for their test on Friday.

Reading- The students will be reading the story, “Little by Little,” an Autobiography, by Jean Little. The students will be able to identify elements of an Autobiography. Please have the students review their vocabulary words for this story. The students will be making predictions in the book “The Westing Game” our class read aloud book. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

Technology- The students will complete their research for their element boxes that they will be creating from an empty tissue box. The students will decorate and create their element boxes in class and then present them to their class.

Art- Fifth Graders Colonial paintings are coming along beautifully! After successfully adding textural highlights and shadows to the foreground, students added branches and leaves to their trees with a natural sea sponge.

Students this week will enhance their background with clouds using sponge painting techniques and use colored pencils to add architectural details to their houses.

Spring Drama Play Dress Rehearsal will be at 10 AM on Friday!

Don't Forget to come out this weekend to see the Spring Drama Production of “Once Upon a Twist”.

This Saturday, is the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Norfolk. Come out and celebrate St. Patrick with Portsmouth Catholic and the school float.

Please do not forget that the students are required to read 10 minutes a night and do IXL for 30 minutes for the week and record it on their Logs. It counts as a quiz grade. Please assist me in helping your child become a lifelong reader. These logs are do every Monday for a quiz grade.

Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...

Religion- The students will be able to explain that Mary was open to God's call and that we are called to imitate Mary's example of discipleship. The students will identify by name, the ways that Mary showed her blessedness. The students will explore why Mary is the greatest of al the saints and the students will learn to appreciate her role in our lives and in the Church. The students will identify the special dates in the church that are related to Mary (the Annunciation and the Assumption). We will celebrate the Stations of the Cross together on Friday.

Math- The students will apply estimation skills to decimal sums and differences. The students will demonstrate how to add two or three and subtract decimals through the thousandths. The students will identify word problems that involve more than on step.

IXL Math-The students can work for mastery on Level G sections C.1 - C.12 and E.1 - E.8 on IXL. This will help your child to practice data and statistics in graphs or through probability. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.

Science- This week the students will be measuring the volume of liquids and solids. The students will be measuring the volume of a rectangular solid. The students will be describing density. The students will also be comparing the density of different metals. The students will be comparing the density of solids and liquids.

Science Lab- The students will be conducting a lab towards the end of the week where they will be determining the density of various wooden cubes.

Social Studies- The students will be able to explain the economic patterns and major industries of colonial America. The students will be able to evaluate the effects of supply and demand on the plantation system. The students will be able to describe the development of the free enterprise system in colonial America. The students will analyze information by finding the main idea and supporting details in a passage. They will also analyze information by summarizing the important elements in a history passage. The students will be able to explain and analyze why American colonists began to develop their own governments and the structures of colonial government.

Reading- The students will be reading the story “Off and Running” a Realistic Fiction, by Gary Soto. The students will be taking their EOS Test on Tuesday. The students will read “Little by Little,” an Autobiography, by Jean Little. The students will be able to identify elements of an Autobiography. Please have the students review their vocabulary words for this story. The students will be making predictions in the book “The Westing Game” our class read aloud book. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

Language Arts- Word Study- The students in the blue group are sorting their words by the prefixes sub-, pro-, com-, and -en. The students in the yellow group are sorting their words by the suffixes -y, -ly, and -ily. This test will be on Friday!

In Vocabulary, the students will be working on Units 17 this week. If you have not accessed the Grammar or Vocabulary websites, please do so by using the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available.

In Grammar, the students will be reviewing Unit 4 Adjectives, Adverbs, Conjunctions and prepositions for their Test this week. Please encourage your child to utilize the activities on the Sadlier Grammar website.

Physical Education/Health- We continue learning strategies and skills involved with the game of Soccer and Whiffle Ball. We begin begin our “Family LIfe” Unit.

Music- Students will review previous knowledge of the recorder by playing Recorder Baseball.

Spanish- This week students will continue to explore the parts of the body.

The  Science Fair is tonight from 6-7PM.  Don't forget that the Book Fair will be open after the Science Fair.

The students will reflect on the power and presence of God in the celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The students will be evaluated on Penance and Reconciliation Chapter 18 Wednesday.

Math- The students will be evaluated on Chapter 7 on Tuesday. The students will be able to locate decimals on a number line.  The students will identify place value in decimals and read and write them through the thousandths in standard and expanded form.  The students will add two or three decimals through the hundredths.  The students will apply estimation skills to decimal sums.

Science Lab- The students will finish their investigation of how to read a thermometer by measuring room temperature and the temperature of a cup of water from a faucet and a cup of water with ice cubes and the temperature at the end of the day.  We will have a visitor from the Jefferson Lab with us on Thursday and we will be conducting a new experiment.

Social Studies- The students will evaluate the effect of the slave codes on the lives of African captives. The students will analyze how the plantation system affected the development of slavery. The students will use the reading objective “sequence” and sequence the events that led to slavery becoming an accepted practice in the colonies. Student’s will also investigate the "Heart" and ways to care for their bodies, as well as learning to identify different types of exercise and it's relationship to keeping their bodies healthy. We discuss Dental health.

Music- Students will review previous knowledge of the recorder by playing Recorder Baseball.

Art- Students will be introduced to the artists Warren Kimble and Grandma Moses. We will have a brief discussion on perspective and look at the composition of landscape paintings by both artists, tying in with Colonial history studies. Students will compose a landscape drawing which we will work on over the next several classes.

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had a fantastic long snow week off and a wonderful weekend!

Tomorrow, February 24 th will be a full day of school. Please make sure your child has his or her lunch with him or her.

Science Fair Projects are due on Tuesday, February 24 th .

Fifth grade is in charge of Mass this week with Fr. Oscar, on Wednesday, February 25 th at 9 AM. Please join us if you are available. Please have your child wear his or her dress uniform. The students in grades 2-8 will be receiving Reconciliation if they have received their first Reconciliation at 10 AM.

Please join us for the Annual School-wide Science Fair on February 25 th from 6-7 PM.The students will not have any written homework on Wednesday night. However, they will have a Math and Reading test on Thursday. Please feel free to take home the science fair projects when you leave after the Science Fair. The Book Fair will be open until 8 PM.

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend!

Mass will be with Fr. Brian, on Wednesday, February 11th. Please have your child wear his or her dress uniform.

Friday, February 13th, we are celebrating Valentine's Day and Grandparent's Day! Please have your child make a valentine for each student in fifth grade and one for their Pre-K4 Buddy. We will celebrate Valentine's Day in the classroom before the Grandparent's Day celebration. A list of names came home on Friday. Students will be able to leave on Friday with their Grandparents. Please have them wait until after the National Junior Honor Society Induction Ceremony as fifth grade has been invited to observe since next year they will be eligible to participate if they meet all requirements.

There will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, February 16th due to President's Day! Enjoy your long weekend!

The students will identify that healing was an important part of Jesus' ministry and gain an understanding of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. The students will be able to explain that Jesus gave the Apostles the power to heal others in his name. They will also be able to pray for those who need comfort and sick.

Math- The students will read, interpret and create various types of graphs ( Line graphs, bar graphs, circle graphs and pictographs) and review the contexts for which each type is best suited. T he students will also use a variety of strategies to solve word problems involving probability and statistics. The students will be evaluated on Chapter 7 next week.

IXL Math-The students can work for mastery on Level G sections S.1 through S.12 or Y.1 through Y.7 on IXL. This will help your child to practice data and statistics in graphs or through probability. Please remind your child to record their information on their Math Logs because their IXL time counts as a quiz grade. The students will only be required 30 minutes on IXL.

Science- This week the students will be comparing the viscosity of liquids and conducting an experiment on viscosity. The students will also be preparing for their next Nancy Larson Test which will be on Thursday.

Science Lab- The students investigated the viscosity of liquids and conducting an experiment on viscosity. They were able to determine if the temperature affected the viscosity of honey. The students had three different samples of the same type of honey, one was at room temperature, one was warm and one was ice cold and the students had to test how quickly it flowed. The students will be creating a graph tomorrow after they determine the average time it took it to flow out of the container.

Social Studies- The students will analyze the locations of colonial cities and explain the geographical features that influences where people settles. The students will describe the contributions of Benjamin Franklin. Then they will compare and contrast two port cities.

Reading- The students will be evaluated on the story “Satchmo's Blues,” an Informational Narrative by Alan Schroeder, in order to identify the vocabulary and to check their comprehension from the lesson. The students will be reading the story “Evelyn Cisneros Prima Ballerina” a Biography, by Charnan Simon. The students will able to identify elements of Biography. Please have the students review their vocabulary words for this story. The students will be making predictions in the book “The Westing Game” our class read aloud book. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.

They will also be learning about using proper grammar when completing sentences and writing their own sentences. They will be identifying three different kinds of Conjunctions and when to apply them to a sentence and prepositions, what they are and how they are used.

Physical Education/Health- Students will participate in conditioning activities, cooperative games and continue their exploration of the heart and circulatory system.

Music- No class due to the Grandparents’ Day Celebration.

Spanish- This week students will continue to understand and explore Spanish colors. They will describe their clothes as well as their classmates clothes.

Technology- The students will be typing their poems and essays for the Catholic Daughters of America Poetry and Essay contest. When the students are finished they will be writing kind statements on Story Lines through their Edmodo Accounts and they will work on math learning games.

Art-Today in fifth Grade, we’ll complete our Art Contest project. Students will finalize their illustrations and paintings in preparation for submission, and will discuss and explore how Fine Art ties in with Religion.
