I hope that you all had a fun weekend!! It was great to see so many of you at the Pirate Pride Potluck on Saturday! Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday, August 27th at 10 AM with Fr. Brian. Please join us if you have an opportunity.
There is No School next Monday, September 3, 2014 because it is Labor Day.
That week we will begin our Scantron Testing. Please remember that the students should get plenty of rest the nights before tests and have a good breakfast in the morning to help them focus on doing their very best.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- The students will be learning to identify how we can serve the Kingdom of God and reviewing our chapter concepts and keywords to prepare for our Chapter 1 Test on Thursday.
Math- We will be continuing to learn about place value with decimals that are greater than one. They will be learning to read and write decimals through the thousandths place. They will also be comparing and ordering whole numbers and decimals. Finally, we will be applying the properties of addition and the rules of subtraction in order to find the missing number. We will be rounding whole numbers and decimals to a given place. I will be mentioning IXL in class and I will be encouraging the class to use their IXL accounts to reinforce the learning that is taking place in the classroom.
Science-On Friday, the students learning how Galileo built a telescope that had only 3x magnification. The students had a blast and really enjoyed building and using the telescope. We are really enjoying our Nancy Larson Science! This week we are learning about the Constellations, asterisms and Polaris (the North Star).
Science Lab- This week we went down to the Science Lab and we tried to solve a problem with a string! I have sent your children home with two strings to have you try to solve the problem with the string as well.
Social Studies-We will be learning about the earth and how we study it using maps and globes. We will be using USA Studies weekly newspapers to enrich our study of our history. The students will be able to identify the continents and the oceans.
Reading-We will be taking an EOS (End of Selection) Test on “The Hot and Cold Summer”, Tomorrow. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the Vocabulary presented in the story.
We will begin reading, “Sees Behind Trees”, which falls in the genre of Historical Fiction.
Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words by using a review of vowel patterns in one syllable words using the VVC, VC, VCC, and VCe patterns. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on Syllable juncture in the VCV and VCCV patterns. They will have one word that is an oddball which is busy. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on consonant alternation. They will be identifying which words have silent consonants and which have sounded consonants. Test on Friday.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on Unit 1. Please visit the website and use the access code located on the second page in their book to create a user log-in so that your child will be able to take advantage of the fun learning games available. Test on Friday.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about complete subjects and predicates as well as simple subjects and predicates. The students will be identifying and writing complete subjects, complete predicates, simple subjects and simple predicates.
Physical Education/Health- This week we participate in skill assessment activities and we explore and participate in President’s Physical Fitness Testing. We continue to delve into the game of Basketball, reviewing rules, regulations and working on basic skills.
Music- Students will demonstrate their knowledge of rhythmic notation playing Music Potato. Students will also practice a new song for mass.
Spanish- This week we will work on saying and writing the numbers from 1-10. Have a wonderful week!!!
Technology- This week in Technology, the students will be learning how to use Edmodo. Thank you to everyone for signing and returning the Internet Acceptable Use Policy, Please check the class website for photos of your child in class.
Art- Welcome to 5th Grade Art Class! To begin our new year, we’ll review our rules and what’s expected of our students, then jump right into some exciting warm-up art activities!
