Just a reminder that Mass this week is on Wednesday, October 21st.
A permission slip came home today and needs to be returned tomorrow if you would like your child to participate in the Heart Health Academy.
October is the Month of Mary. If your child has a rosary, please send it to school with them. We will be saying a decade of the rosary each morning. If they do not have a rosary I will provide them with one to use in class. Thanks so much!!
Please do not forget that the students are required to read for 50 minutes a week and do IXL for 30 minutes a week. Please assist me in helping your child become a lifelong reader. They need to turn in their Reading Logs every Monday morning as it counts for a grade.
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion-The students will be able to explain that people of all ages are welcomed to be baptized. They will also be able to describe the parts of the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism. The students will identify and understand the importance of water in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The students will also explore the symbols used during the Sacrament of Baptism. Chapter 5 Test will be next week. All Saints Day projects are due on November 4th.
Math- The students will utilize compatible number to estimate for division. The students will be dividing larder dividends by 2-digit divisors. They will also divide money amounts by 1- and 2-digit divisors. We will be learning to use the order of operations to evaluate numerical expressions. The students will solve word problems by making a table and/or finding a pattern. We will begin preparing for our Chapter 3 Test, next week. The students can work on Level G section D.1 through D.16 on IXL. This will help your children to practice their division.
Science-The students will be identifying how solar and lunar eclipses occur. We will be reviewing and preparing for our test on Thursday on the Solar System. The students will be identifying elements that make up matter. They will also identify and interpret information on the Periodic table of the Elements.
Science Lab- the students are going to be using the Scientific Method in order to determine what will happen when they place packing peanuts in different solutions.
Social Studies-The students will be identifying the major economic and cultural changes that occurred in the thirteenth-century Europe. They will be examining the influence on Europe of Marco Polo's travels to Asia. They will explore how trade spurred the development of cities and towns throughout Europe. The students will identify and interpret information from a variety of different graphs and explore uses for them. They will identify the effects of international trading and banking on Europe, Africa and Asia.
Reading-We will be reading and taking the EOS (End of Selection) Test on, “Folktales from Asia” on Wednesday, October 21st. Please make sure that your child spends some extra time reading over the story and identifying the vocabulary presented in the story. The students are doing a great job during D.E.A.R Time. Please remind them to document their minutes for their home D.E.A.R. Time as it counts as a quiz.
Language Arts-Word Study- The students in the Yellow Group will be sorting their words based off of y + inflected endings. The students in the Pink Group will be sorting their words based on the R- influences A in Accented Syllables (1st ar, 1st long -a, and 2nd long -a). They will have one oddball- toward. The students in the Blue Group will be sorting their words based on Suffixes (-ment, -less, -ness, and -lessness). Test on Friday.
This week in Vocabulary we will be working on reviewing the words, definitions, synonyms, and antonyms Units 1-3. The students will be reviewing their words by completing denotation and connotations, through word study and classical root. Test on Friday. The students will use their school business email accounts to login and use the activities to help them to master the skills in both the Vocabulary and Grammar websites.
In Grammar, the students will be learning about how to identify and the proper usage of Appositives and reviewing Unit 2 to prepare for the Unit 2 Test this week.
Physical Education/Health- We continue learning strategies and skills involved with the games of Kickball and Hockey. In Health class we discuss nutrition.
Music- Students will identify and perform level 2 ingredients of rhythm words.
Spanish- Students will learn “El Padre Nuestro”, and will continue to identify differences when greeting adults and peers. They will continue to work on numbers from 1- 100.
Technology- This week the students will be creating a boat that they will race against another student. The students will need to design their boat from the supplies that are provided.
Art-Today in Art class, students will be introduced to the work of artist Claude Monet and compare and contrast his Water Lilies paintings to the work of George Seurat. Students will use oil pastels to draw before using watercolors to paint the back ground.
