Hello Everyone!
I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend.
This week the students will have Mass on Thursday at 10 am. Please make sure that they wear their dress uniform on this day.
***No School on Friday!***
Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade...
Religion- October is the Month of Mary and we are saying the rosary together as a school. The students will be learning more about the sacrament of Baptism and how it is the foundation of Christian life. The students will learn about the Incarnation, prophets and what eternal life means. Please have your student thinking about a saint that they are interested in learning more about. I will be sending home information about our All Saints Day Project, where the students will dress-up as their favorite saint.
Math- We will be learning about zeros in the multiplier, multiplication with money and using the problem solving strategy: use more than one step. We are also continuing to take our one minute multiplication quizzes. Chapter 2 Test will be next week!
Science-The students will be preparing for their Unit A Chapter 2 Test that is on Thursday. We will be learning about Total Hip Replacements in dogs because of hip dysplasia and about the career of a Geneticist named Eduardo S. Cantu.
Science Lab-Today, we completed a lab where we were focused on making observations and inferences in order to develop our Hypothesis. The students did an outstanding job! We did three different experiments. We had to hypothesize on how many water drops could fit on a penny before it overflowed, How many paper clips could fit in a cup of water before it overflowed, and what happens when we add sand to a cup of water and stir. The sand that was added to the cup of water seemed to be a class favorite as it was “special sand.” Be sure to ask your students what the results were to each of these exciting experiments.
Social Studies-We will be learning about the Native Americans of the West. The students will find out how the Tlingit and other Peoples of the West used their environment to enrich their lives. They will learn about the importance of technology and potlatchs in their lives.
Reading-We will be preparing for our first Unit 1 Test and then we will begin reading a story called “We'll Never Forget You Roberto Clemente.”
Language Arts-The students will continue to sort their words by each feature, daily. This will help the students to determine what sound to listen for and what they should write when identifying other words that also have the same feature.
In Grammar, the students will be able to identify Pronouns and nouns. We will be starting our Vocabulary book tomorrow. This test will be each Friday. This week we will not have a vocabulary test. There is a great website feature with our vocabulary books.
Physical Education/Health- We will investigate being a “Peacemaker.” October is anti-bullying month and we explore ways that we can be peacemakers in our communities. We will also explore the game of Hockey.
Spanish- Counting to 100, recognizing fruits and vegetables, and the pronouns tú (you informal) and usted (you formal).
Music-Students will review and practice playing half note rhythms using notes B-A-G on recorder.
Technology-We will be continuing the classroom olympics and learning how to record our data into a spreadsheet.
Art- This week we will begin a new unit on architecture. We will do preliminary sketches based on architectural images, striving to achieve realistic architectural details.
I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend.
