I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend. I wanted to send a special thanks to all of the parents who have sent in items to create our rain sticks for the POW-WOW. The POW-WOW is next week, November 27th at 10 AM, just a reminder that day is a noon dismissal! If you have not taken the time to sign up to bring something in for the POW-WOW please sign up on SchoolSpeak. If you have not sent in a T-shirt for your child please make sure it meets the following specifications: plain white T-shirt that is at least one size larger than what your child normally wears as the shirts will shrink. I am looking for one parent volunteer to tie-dye the t-shirts. If you would like to earn volunteer hours for doing this for our class, please let me know. Thursday, November 21st at 9:30 AM there will be an awards assembly for Honor Roll. Mass will begin at 10 AM, following the Awards ceremony. If you are able to join us for the Awards Assembly or Mass, please do. Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade... Religion- The students will be taking their Chapter 8 Test Tomorrow on Confirmation. The students are going to be learning more information about the actual parts of the celebration of Confirmation. The students will be able to identify the symbols and actions of the celebration of Confirmation. They will also be learning about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Math- We will be learning about prime and composite numbers and prime factorization as we begin our chapter on fractions. Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises K.1 and K.2 are all excellent choices for practice this week. Science-The students will be learning more about fertilization and pollination as wells as identifying and labeling the parts of a flower. The students will also be learning about the different methods of pollination. Science Lab- Today in class we learned about density and I did a demonstration using diet coke and regular coke to discuss density with the students. The students had to compare both cans for similarities and differences and then we took both cans and put them in water and one sunk and one floated. Ask your students which can sunk and which can floated and why. The students also had fun playing with the density bottle. Ask them to explain the density bottle to you as well. Social Studies-We will be learning about the Europeans and when they came to the Americas. The students will become familiar with many explorers and conquerors including Christopher Columbus, Hernando Cortes as well as others. Reading-We are reading “Everglades” which is an Informative Text written by Jean Craighead George about children who are being told a story about how the Everglades have been affected by pollution and what they can do to help the Everglades when they get older. The November Book Report will be on a Fantasy book and the students will be creating a cereal box and then making a commercial to encourage others to “buy the cereal/read the book”. Language Arts-The students will be learning new Word Study words this week to help the students to spell based off of the main features included in their word lists. In Grammar, the students will be learning about verbs. The students will be able to identify future tense of verbs and linking verbs. We are continuing to work on the Ideas Trait, by developing strong ideas for our writing. Last week the students did a wonderful job writing “How to Cook a Turkey”. They were very creative and some of them were very close to how some parents may actually cook a turkey. This week the students will be working on writing Native American Tales in which they will translate them into Native American Symbols and put them one “buffalo hides”. We will be continuing to work on figurative language to make our paragraphs more interesting to our readers. Physical Education/Health- Students will participate in fitness circuits, badminton skill drills and President’s Physical Fitness Testing. Music- Students will learn songs for the Christmas program and continue practice on the recorder. Spanish- The students will recognize the definite articles and the Spanish genders. Technology- The students will be creating a Scratch animated presentation of the Seven Sacraments. When the students are finished creating their Scratch, they will present them to the class. Art- Last week students were introduced to proper sketching techniques and drew from mannequins. These were really successful! This week students will be introduced to the American Artist June Nam Paik tying in geography with technology.

Wednesday, fifth grade is in charge of the school liturgy and we would love it if you would be able to attend! ****It's November, and that means that it is time to begin preparing for our Pow-wow. I will be posting a sign up sheet on SchoolSpeak later on this week that will list of several items that I will need for our Pow-wow which is coming up later on this month. Each student will need a Plain white T-shirt that we will Tie-Dye and use to create our Native American clothing, our buffalo skins. If you have a plain white T-shirt please make sure that it is at least one size larger than what your child normally wears as the shirts will shrink. Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade... Religion- The students will continue learning about the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. The students will also learn that Pentecost Sunday is considered the Church's birthday. The students will be able to explain what happened on Pentecost and what stemmed from it. Math- We will be learning about dividing money, using the order of operations and solving word problems using various strategies. We are also continuing to take our one minute multiplication quizzes. Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises H.3, H.4, H.10 and H.11 are all excellent choices for practice this week. Science-The students will be learning more about the process of Photosynthesis. They will also learn about the different layers of leaves. The students will learn about the bi-products that are produced during the process of photosynthesis. Today, was the first day that I had the students work on their outlines with very minimal tips from me as to what needs to be included and I must say I am very impressed! Everyone was doing an awesome job! Science Lab- Today in class we discussed hurricanes and watched a video on them. We also plotted the path of a hurricane using the longitude and latitude of actual hurricanes. The students will be able to use this information to identify their hurricane and if it caused a lot of damage or not. They will also notice that once their hurricane makes landfall it will begin to slow down. Social Studies-We will be continuing to learn more about how Prince Henry of Portugal aided navigation with bringing together shipbuilders, mapmakers, scientists and ship captains to create a caravel. The students will also be introduced to two important Portuguese explorers, Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco de Gama. Reading-We are reading “Island of the Blue Dolphins” which is a Personal Narrative written by Gary Paulsen about a sled dog named Storm who would play tricks on Gary Paulsen, the author. The students are really enjoying this story. The November Book Report will be on a Fantasy book. Information on the details of the book report will be coming home soon. Language Arts-The students will be learning new Word Study words this week to help the students to spell based off of the main features included in their word lists. In Grammar, the students will be learning about verbs. The students will be able to identify past and present tense of verbs. We are continuing to work on the Ideas Trait, by developing strong ideas for our writing. The students are really writing some interesting stories while focusing on developing their ideas for their writing. We are also working on figurative language, specifically alliteration and similes to make our paragraphs more interesting to our readers. This week the students will have Mass on Thursday at 10 am. Please make sure that they wear their dress uniform on this day and bring their tennis shoes to school. Friday there will be a Breast Cancer Tag Day with a donation of $1 sponsored by the SAC. There will also be a bake sale sponsored by SAC on Friday. Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade... Religion- The students will continue to learn more about the sacrament of Baptism and the signs and symbols related to it. The students will also begin learning about the seasons of the liturgical year. Starting with Ordinary Time. Please help your student to choose a saint that they are interested in learning more about, for our All Saints Day Project. Once they have chosen their Saint, we will write our paragraphs in class and then they will need to practice presenting and put together the costume for their saint from home. Math- We will be learning about patterns in division, three digit quotients, long division with larger quotients, division with zeros in the quotients as well as checking division with multiplication. We are also continuing to take our one minute multiplication quizzes. Please remind your student to practice on IXL- Level G exercises H.7, H.8 and H.9 are all excellent choices for practice this week. Science-The students will be reading their Science Studies Weekly to learn more about the various fields of scientific study. The students will also be learning about Vascular and Non-vascular plants, cone-bearing vascular and flowering vascular plants. Then the students will be comparing the lifecycle of a frog to that of a plant. Science Lab-Today, we completed a lab where we were focused on the Scientific Method, mainly making observations and inferences in order to develop our Hypothesis. We watched a video where the students had to hypothesize about the accuracy of NFL pro Drew Brees and an Olympic Archer. The students were very impressed with the results. Reading-We will continue reading “Folktales from Asia” which is a collection of several folktales from three different Asian countries. Each folktale teaches a different lesson. October Story Skeleton Book Report will be due on Tuesday, October 29th! Language Arts-The students will continue to sort their words by each feature, daily. This will help the students to determine what sound to listen for and what they should write when identifying other words that also have the same feature. In Grammar, the students will be able to identify Appositives and reviewing pronouns and nouns. Then we will begin working on action verbs. We will also begin working on the Ideas Trait, by developing strong ideas for our writing. Physical Education/Health- We continue to explore the game of Hockey learning rules, terms associated with the game. Lead up activities and safety are also investigated this week. Spanish- The students will recite the months of the year by following the beat of We, we, we will rock you ♪ We will also learn how to write the months and the names of some fruits and vegetables in Spanish. Music-Students will be learning songs for the Christmas program and continue practice on the recorder. Technology-We will be finishing recording their classroom olympics data onto a spreadsheet. Then the students will type their stories written focused on the Voice Trait. Art- Continuing with our cityscape creation this week! This elaborate painting, as well as our self portrait, will be coming home in a few weeks as part of our Original Works Fundraiser! Please make sure that they wear their dress uniform on this day. ***No School on Friday!*** Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade... Religion- October is the Month of Mary and we are saying the rosary together as a school. The students will be learning more about the sacrament of Baptism and how it is the foundation of Christian life. The students will learn about the Incarnation, prophets and what eternal life means. Please have your student thinking about a saint that they are interested in learning more about. I will be sending home information about our All Saints Day Project, where the students will dress-up as their favorite saint. Math- We will be learning about zeros in the multiplier, multiplication with money and using the problem solving strategy: use more than one step. We are also continuing to take our one minute multiplication quizzes. Chapter 2 Test will be next week! Science-The students will be preparing for their Unit A Chapter 2 Test that is on Thursday. We will be learning about Total Hip Replacements in dogs because of hip dysplasia and about the career of a Geneticist named Eduardo S. Cantu. Science Lab-Today, we completed a lab where we were focused on making observations and inferences in order to develop our Hypothesis. The students did an outstanding job! We did three different experiments. We had to hypothesize on how many water drops could fit on a penny before it overflowed, How many paper clips could fit in a cup of water before it overflowed, and what happens when we add sand to a cup of water and stir. The sand that was added to the cup of water seemed to be a class favorite as it was “special sand.” Be sure to ask your students what the results were to each of these exciting experiments. Social Studies-We will be learning about the Native Americans of the West. The students will find out how the Tlingit and other Peoples of the West used their environment to enrich their lives. They will learn about the importance of technology and potlatchs in their lives. Reading-We will be preparing for our first Unit 1 Test and then we will begin reading a story called “We'll Never Forget You Roberto Clemente.” Language Arts-The students will continue to sort their words by each feature, daily. This will help the students to determine what sound to listen for and what they should write when identifying other words that also have the same feature. In Grammar, the students will be able to identify Pronouns and nouns. We will be starting our Vocabulary book tomorrow. This test will be each Friday. This week we will not have a vocabulary test. There is a great website feature with our vocabulary books. Physical Education/Health- We will investigate being a “Peacemaker.” October is anti-bullying month and we explore ways that we can be peacemakers in our communities. We will also explore the game of Hockey. Spanish- Counting to 100, recognizing fruits and vegetables, and the pronouns tú (you informal) and usted (you formal). Music-Students will review and practice playing half note rhythms using notes B-A-G on recorder. Technology-We will be continuing the classroom olympics and learning how to record our data into a spreadsheet. Art- This week we will begin a new unit on architecture. The induction ceremony and Faith in Action Awards will follow Mass on Wednesday. Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade... Religion- We will be taking our Chapter 3 Test Thursday. The students will be continue learning how the Church celebrates the Seven Sacraments. They will be able to identify the Seven Sacraments. They will understand that each sacrament fits into one of the three categories, Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing, or Sacraments of Service to others. Math- We will be learning about Patterns in Multiplication, Estimating Products, Zeros in the Multiplicand, Multiplying two and three digits. We are also continuing to take our one minute multiplication quizzes. The students will learn how to multiply using the clustering strategy, which many students enjoy. Science-This week we are learning about Complete and Incomplete metamorphosis. The students will be able to identify the stages of development for each by the end of the week. We will be discussing Inherited traits. The students will need to identify three traits that they did or could inherit from their parents. Science Lab-Today, we completed a lab on Sound waves using a tuning fork and a cup of water. We discussed how sound in outer space cannot be heard based on the fact that sound travels through matter. We also observed Newton's Laws of motion by using Newton's cradle. Social Studies-We will be learning about the Native Americans of the Plains and the Cause and Effect, reading skill. The students will find out how the Lakota and other Plains Peoples used their environment to enrich their lives. They will learn about the importance of Buffalo and how they never wasted any parts of the buffalo, finding a purpose for each part. Reading-We will continue reading the story called "Elena." This story is a Historical Fiction piece. So far the students this that this story is sad and they feel bad for the main character. I am pretty sure that they also see the benefits of what her mother did for her family. Language Arts-The students will continue to sort their words by each feature, daily. This will help the students to determine what sound to listen for and what they should write when identifying other words that also have the same feature. In Grammar, the students will be able to identify sentence fragments and run-ons, and correct them. We will also review all of the lessons in Chapter 1 and complete a quiz. The students will also be learning how to diagram sentences. Physical Education/Health- We will continue to explore different types of exercise. We will work on conditioning and flexibility exercises. Rotation stations which highlight a particular group of muscle groups, particular type of exercise will make up a fun and engaging obstacle course for the students. Football Ball will be our game this week focusing on football skill drills. Spanish- In Spanish we will continue to identify and recite parts of the body and recognize numbers 0 – 50. We will use activities from Quizlet. Music-Students will continue to explore notes B-A-G on recorder learning new songs and rhythms. Technology-We will be continuing the classroom olympics and learning how to record our data into a spreadsheet. Art- The 5th graders enjoyed discussing Leonardo Da Vinci’s portrait of the Mona Lisa. We discussed the history behind it and speculations of where her smile comes from. This week we will continue working on self portraits and using mirrors to achieve a likeness. Hello Everyone!

I have not had any volunteers step forward for this position so I am posting it again this week in hopes that a parent will step forward. PTO is looking for a 5th grade parent representative! If your schedule allows you to make this commitment, it would be greatly appreciated! Please contact me and let me know if you would like to fill this position. This week the students will need to wear their Mass uniform on Wednesday(for School Picture Day) and Thursday (for Mass) this week. Here are a few highlights of what is happening this week in Fifth Grade... Religion- We will be taking our Chapter 2 Test tomorrow. The students will be learning how the Church celebrates the Seven Sacraments. They will be able to identify the Seven Sacraments. They will understand that the Sacraments are a special sign of God's love. Math-We will also be preparing for our Chapter 1 Test on Place Value. Then we will be learning about Multiplication, the terms and how to write addition problems as multiplication sentences. Science-The students have been working on outlining Chapter 2 Lesson 1. They are doing an excellent job with their new outlining skill. We are going to be learning more about the process of Mitosis. We will also be learning about Animal Growth andReproduction. More specifically we will be learning about the process of mitosis, regeneration, asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. Science Lab-Tomorrow we will be doing a Chemistry Lab where we melt styrofoam. The students will complete this lab outside because of the fumes. Once the students have completed their lab report they will be able to mold their melted styrofoam into a shape. (Please don't tell the students, its a surprise!) Social Studies-We will be learning about the Native Americans of the Woodlands. The students will find out how the Penobscot, Natchez and Hodenosaunee used their environment to enrich their lives. They will also learn about the Clan Mothers, Iroquois Confederacy and the Grand Council. Reading-We will continue reading the story called "Dear Mrs. Parks." Each student will be writing a letter asking for advice from Mrs. Parks. The students were amazed at Rosa Parks age and they determined that she would have been 100 years old this year! Language Arts-The students will begin sorting their words by each feature, daily. This will help the students to determine what sound to listen for and what they should write when identifying other words that also have the same feature. In Grammar, we will be learning how to identify simple and compound sentences using the coordinating conjunctions. We will also be learning about complex sentences and subordinating conjunctions. The students will be able to identify sentence fragments and run-ons, and correct them. The students will also be learning how to diagram sentences. Physical Education/Health- We will continue to explore different types of exercise. We will work on conditioning and flexibility exercises. Rotation stations which highlight a particular group of muscle groups, particular type of exercise will make up a fun and engaging obstacle course for the students. Soccer will be our game of the week. Spanish- In Spanish we will learn the song, “Cabeza, rodillas, hombros y pies” to help us learn the different body parts. We will use Quizlet flashcards to review body parts and write correctly. We will continue to select numbers 1- 50 through Scatter. Music-Students will review notes B-A-G on recorder and learn tone and rhythm on the recorder. Technology-We will be continuing the classroom olympics and learning how to record our data into a spreadsheet. Art- The 5th graders enjoyed discussing Leonardo Da Vinci’s portrait of the Mona Lisa. The students will be identifying the reasons why we celebrate the Paschal Mystery in the liturgy and to learning about the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Math- We will be learning how to solve word problems using the Guess and Test Strategy. We will also be preparing for our Chapter 1 Test on Place Value. Then we will be learning about Multiplication, the terms and how to write addition problems as multiplication sentences. Science- Tomorrow we will be taking our Unit A Chapter 1 Test. The students have study guides to help them study. This week we are learning about Animal Growth and Reproduction. More specifically we will be learning about the process of mitosis, regeneration, asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. Science Lab- Today, we worked on solving a problem with a string. Each student will be bringing home two strings to try their science experiment with family members. The students had to write their own lab report today. They did an awesome job!! Social Studies- We will be learning about the Native Americans of the Southwest. The students will find out how the Hopi and the Navajo used their environment to enrich their lives. Reading- We will continue reading the story called "Yang the Third and Her Impossible Family." We will also continue working on writing a Narrative Paragraph about a person from colonial times who came to America on a boat, with or without their family, with limited funds and luggage. Language Arts- The students will begin sorting their words by each feature, daily. This will help the students to determine what sound to listen for and what they should write when identifying other words that also have the same feature. In Grammar, we will be learning how to identify simple predicates in a compound predicate, simple and compound sentences and complex sentences and their subordinating conjunctions. The students will also be learning how to diagram sentences. Physical Education/Health- Personal Hygiene Conflict resolution Spanish-Fifth Grade will recite numbers 1-100, identify the Spanish alphabet, and identify the parts of the body. Music- Students will begin playing recorder this week. Please be sure to have your recorder and folder for music class on Friday. The students will be gaining an understanding of our relationship with Jesus, understanding how we can proclaim the Good News, identifying the reasons why we celebrate the Paschal Mystery in the liturgy and to learning about the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. Math- We will be learning how to add three or more addends, with regrouping, subtract whole numbers and money amounts with zeros in the minuend, add or subtract numbers through hundred thousands and money amounts up to five digits and reading and writing Roman numerals through thousands. We will be preparing for our first math test next week. Science- This week we are learning about how our body systems work together. The students will find out what the structure and function of the bones are, and how all of our systems (Skeletal, Muscular and Nervous) work together. Ask your students to identify a hinge, immovable and a ball and socket joint on the body. Science Lab- Today, we worked on learning and applying the Scientific Method using an m & m Lab. The students had to identify the purpose of the lab, which was "How many of each color of m&m's are in a bag?" Next, the students had to do research and determine what they knew about their bag of m & m's. Then the students had to develop their hypothesis and perform the experiment. The students were then able to analyze their results by using a graph. Finally, the students wrote their conclusion, by applying the data that they acquired through this lab they were able to determine if their hypothesis was true or false. Social Studies- We will be learning about the Inca Civilization and reviewing Chapter 1 to prepare for our test on Thursday. On Friday, we will begin studying the Native Americans of the Southwest. The students will find out how the Hopi and the Navajo used their environment to enrich their lives. Reading- We will continue reading the story called "Sees Behind Trees." We will also continue working on writing a Narrative Paragraph about a person from colonial times who came to America on a boat, with or without their family, with limited funds and luggage. Language Arts- The students will begin sorting their words by each feature, daily. This will help the students to determine what sound to listen for and what they should write when identifying other words that also have the same feature. In Grammar, we will be learning how to identify subjects in imperative sentences. The students will be learning how to identify simple subjects or predicates in a compound subject or predicate. Write simple subjects or predicates to complete compound subjects or predicates and combine sentences by forming compound subjects or predicates. The students will also be learning how to diagram sentences. Physical Education/Health- Personal Hygiene Conflict resolution Spanish- The students will continue to identify and recite the Spanish Alphabet. They will also learn an alphabet song. Music- Students will begin playing recorder this week. Please be sure to have your recorder and folder for music class on Friday. Technology- We will be doing classroom olympics and learning how to record our data into a spreadsheet. Art- The students made a portfolio cover to keep all their art work together. |
